Oscar's very pregnant niece turns up unexpectedly in the duo's apartment, determined to have her and her husband's firstborn via natural childbirth in the Bronx motel where they honeymooned.
This episode includes examples of the following tropes:
- Big Rotten Apple: Oscar's niece runs away from her home in Iowa so she can give birth outside of a hospital - she wants to deliver her baby in the "simple setting" of a motel in the Bronx. This elicits shock and serious concern from Oscar, Felix, and other characters to the point that everyone's trying to get her to go to a hospital to give birth - only for her to end up giving birth in Oscar and Felix's apartment!
- Both Sides Have a Point: While Martha's decision to have the baby in a Bronx hotel is understandably presented as unwise, the episode treats her desire to remain awake for the birth of her child as reasonable and sympathetic. After being told by a natural birth class that they think she should go to a hospital, she agrees to the compromise of delivering in a hospital without general anesthetic.
- Death Glare: Felix glares unblinkingly at Oscar for several minutes after he tries to call Martha's parents.
- Delivery Guy: Oscar ends up being the primary attendant to Martha as she gives birth until Dr. Nancy Cunningham arrives. Even then, Nancy still credits him as being a lot of help.
- In-Universe Nickname: Blanche's side of the family calls Oscar "Uncle Sloppy."
- Ironic Echo: Felix, who thinks Oscar got Martha pregnant, asks him if "Springfield, Iowa" rings a bell. When Martha clears up the mistake, Oscar asks Felix if the words "you should be ashamed of yourself" ring a bell.
- Panicky Expectant Father: Martha's husband Phil doesn't appear, as he's in the army and can't get leave. Oscar and Felix pick up the slack. Oscar especially panics before the birth itself, when Martha still plans to give birth in the Bronx, and he calms down enough during the birth itself to assist Nancy. Felix stays relatively calm for most of the episode but experiences psychosomatic labor pains after the birth actually starts.
- Relative Error: When he finds Martha on their couch and hears she was looking for Oscar, Felix understandably thinks she might be a girl he had a fling with and scolds Oscar. Martha ignorantly clears up the misunderstanding when she calls Oscar "uncle" in front of Felix, who is mortified.
