Season 2 Episode 02:

Treasure Island

At the clinic, OA discovers what happened to her friends back at Hap's. Karim turns his attention to a doctor who worked for Pierre Ruskin.

Tropes present in this episode include:

  • Accidental Murder: Rachel sees...something terrible in Hap's lab and stabs him with a scalpel out of rage and horror. He accidentally kills her in self-defense.
  • Alternate Universe:
    • Here its indicated that Rachel got aphasianote  from her accident and Renata moved to the United States at the age of 12, rather than staying in Cuba until adulthood.
    • Its all but outright stated that "Michelle", the missing teen Karim is looking for, is an alternate version of Buck.
  • Call-Back: Dr. Roberts mentions that Rachel has aphasia from a car accident when she was younger.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Karim admits to Dr. Rhodes that he used to work for the FBI infiltrating Muslim communities and arresting radicalized young Muslim men. Now, he regrets not helping those young men toward a better path.
  • Death of Personality:
    • The original Homer didn't make to the other dimension. Instead, Prairie meets another version of him who has no feelings for her whatsoever and idolizes Dr. Percy.
    • The OA considers herself and Nina different people.
  • Fanservice: Karim strips to his underwear to retrieve Dr. Rhodes's drone, which fell into a river.
  • Forced into Evil: Hap forces Rachel to help him carry out his schemes because she can't speak.
  • Nobody Poops: Averted. The OA mentions that in the original universe, the NDE crew had to relieve themselves in the small stream that crossed their cells.
  • Not Quite Dead: The junkie from the first episode is still alive and being treated/experimentally on by Hap.
  • Offscreen Teleportation: In-universe. Karim looks at police footage that show he and Donald were the only people to enter the empty house in weeks. There's footage of the junkie falling from the window...but none of him going in.
  • Poison Is Evil: Hap coerced the remaining NDE crew to help him travel to another dimension by poisoning them, meaning they had to travel or they'd die.
  • Timey-Wimey Ball: The OA and Dr. Roberts hear Homer's footsteps upstairs and soon afterwards a nurse informs them that a patient is running around in his underwear, indicating they are experiencing Homer's second NDE from a different perspective.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: Hap hits himself in the face with a clock to make it seem that the OA is violent and needs to be put in solitary confinement.
