Movie: My Pet Monster (1986)

This review contains examples of:

  • Armor-Piercing Question: During the phone call, he starts ashamedly shrinking into himself when the director asks why a 28-year-old man is watching a kid's movie on his own.
  • Captain Obvious: "I'm a dinosaur." It Makes Sense in Context.
  • Covers Always Lie: Critic criticizes the monster in the movie for looking nothing like the toy when the monster on the cover looks more faithful, until he realizes the monster on the cover is the toy.
  • Downer Ending: The episode ends with Critic staring out the window, parodying the film's own sudden dark ending.
  • Heroic BSoD: "I'm the Nostalgia Critic, and I... I need to think a few things over."
  • Hypocritical Humor: See Unusually Uninteresting Sight.
  • Mood Whiplash: The film ends with a dark Sequel Hook that has never been resolved, but haunted Critic for years. Likewise the review ends on a dark note that carries over to the next episode.
  • Sequel Hook: Will The Critic retire from his job? Stay tuned for the next episode and find out!
  • Shout-Out:
    • The Critic mentions that the museum should have a warning of "you may turn into technicolor Wookiee diarrhoea". He also complains about the appearance of the toy orange chains as "The Hulk's casual kinkiness".
    • Dino-Rob's head is a commercially-licensed Jurassic Park velociraptor latex Halloween mask. Also an instance of Off-the-Shelf FX.
    • The episode plays "The Lonely Man" over the end credits.
  • 10-Minute Retirement: The ending.
  • Title Drop: The forced title drop of "That's my pet monster" annoys the Critic and he compares it to the title drops of The Lord of the Rings.
  • Unresolved Sexual Tension: The Critic parodies the bully's suck-up friend by pretending to be him, writing a diary about how he has not the courage to reveal his love.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: The Critic is angered at how easily people ignore the monster, and rushes out to complain to Rob about it. However, he easily ignores the fact that Rob now has the head of a dinosaur.

"Hey, that's a good one, Bernie!"
