Film: Independence Day (1996)
This review contains examples of:
- Call-Back: The movie begins with the alien spacecraft heading towards Earth. The Critic wonders where he's seen that opening before, and realizes it's from Suburban Commando.
- Convection, Schmonvection: Referenced; when Jasmine is able to hide in a workman's shed to avoid getting burned by an explosion:Critic: Yeah, hide there! The explosion will never get to look for you there.
- It's Not Supposed to Win Oscars: Invoked; The Critic refutes this line of thinking:Critic: But SO many people keep telling me "Oh, it's a popcorn movie! Can't you just have fun?" Well, let me tell you something; a water slide is fun. All the slipping and sliding, it's just great. But if someone took you off the waterslide, shook you, gave you a noogie and then spat in your face and put you back on the water slide, you'd be like... "That wasn't fun; that was weird and annoying." And THAT'S this movie.
- Jumping the Shark: Invoked. The Critic accuses the film of doing this during the Area 51 scene.
- Long List: Of all the character stereotypes present in the film.
- Running Gag: "Boomer will live."
- Shout-Out:
- In the introductory scene for July 3rd, we see the remains of the Statue of Liberty while we hear "You maniacs! You blew it up!".
- The scene where the military planes fight the aliens in the desert is chock-full of these: Peppy shows up at one point advising the pilots to "Do a barrel roll!", after Jimmy's killed, Stan and Kyle pop up to do their They Killed Kenny Again routine (with the Critic editing it so that Stan says "Jimmy" instead of "Kenny"), and at the end of the scene when Will Smith punches the one alien while making his "Welcome to Earth!" quip, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air credits begin playing.
- Sting: When the Critic says, "Checkmate."
- Stupid Sexy Flanders: After saying that Will Smith is "the most charming man alive," the Critic fantasizes about him for a few seconds before slapping himself.Critic: BOOBS! You like BOOBS!
"Checkmate."
