Film: Hook (1991)

This review contains examples of:

  • Actor Allusioninvoked
Young Wendy: Boy, why are you crying?
Critic as Peter: 'Cause you're Gwyneth Paltrow and you're gonna grow up to win an Oscar. I'm gonna grow up to have a supporting role on Sisters!
  • Big "SHUT UP!": Critic points out that Peter is saying this while he's annoyed by his kids' playing when he could just go into another room.
    • Also during the "You're Peter?" scene combined with Abbot and Costello's "Who's On First?" skit, when it's too much for him.
    • Also when Peter starts getting a bit too much into his Pan identity.
Peter: I like this game. Let's play another one.
Critic: Okay. Can you form a sentence out of these words? UP THE FUCK SHUT!
  • The Cameo: Film Brain briefly appears exclaiming, "Symbolism!" when Wendy draws a parallel between pirates and Peter's career as a law attorney.
    Critic: What was that?
  • Crack Pairing: In response to George Lucas and Carrie Fisher's cameo, the Critic exclaims, "Go, erotic fan fiction writers, to your keyboards! A new world of sexual Star Wars fantasies awaits you!"
  • Continuity Nod: The Critic reuses the "Zuul, motherfucker, Zuul!" gag when Hook kidnaps Peter's kids.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:invoked The Critic brings up that Jack causing a ruckus on the plane can be misinterpreted as terrorism these days.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Played with when the scene where Peter says that he wanted to grow up so he can be a father is blasted by the Critic bringing up Peter's attitude toward his kids at the beginning.
Critic: That's right, [Peter came back from Neverland] to have children of his own to neglect and forget about.
  • Jerkass: Critic protests Peter's attitude to his kids by doing an imitation of a killjoy father.
  • "Not Making This Up" Disclaimer:
    • When the Critic mentions a cameo appearance by Phil Collins, he adds, "I'm not even kidding! That's really Phil Collins! IMDB it; it's totally him!"
    • When the Critic recognizes the kissing couple sprinkled by pixie dust as George Lucas and Carrie Fisher, he exclaims, "I swear to God, that's not a joke!"
  • Plot Hole:
    • The Critic counts five of them during the scene where Peter remembers his past life: 1.) Why was a new hideout built on top of the one Hook burnt down when Peter left Neverland? 2.) Why didn't Hook just burn down the new hideout? 3.) Peter couldn't literally run away from home as a child, he just strolled away. ("I guess he used his psychic powers.") 4.) Peter ran away from home because growing up meant you will die someday, but the Critic points out that at the time Peter was too young to have any concept of age or death. 5.) Peter was clearly growing up from a baby to a teenager while living in Neverland, which was supposed to be impossible.
    • The Critic wonders where Hook and Smee got Peter's medical records and background (including Jack's recent emotional scars), suspecting a private records office was involved.
  • Retirony: When Peter slices "the world's slowest moving coconut" thrown at him by Rufio, the Critic responds, "That coconut had just two days left until retirement, you bastard!"
  • Running Gag: "My Jack."
  • Shout-Out:
    • When Peter gives Jack his watch, a clip from Pulp Fiction is shown depicting Captain Koons giving a boy a watch.
    • When Wendy gets bad vibes during Hook's kidnapping of Peter's children, a clip from A New Hope is shown of Obi-Wan Kenobi saying, "I felt a great disturbance in the Force."
    • The scene where Wendy confronts Peter after the kidnapping is edited to have Peter view Wendy as crazy as the Vengaboys' "We Like to Party" plays.
    • Crysta from FernGully: The Last Rainforest is shown dying when Peter exclaims, "I do not believe in fairies!"
    • Wheaties is parodied as "Steroid Wheaties", with Julia Roberts's Tinkerbell gracing the cover and the advertising line, "Now with more penis shrinkage!"
    • The "You're Peter?" scene is compared to Abbott and Costello's "Who's on First?" routine.
    • The Critic claims that Peter was "saved by a Skittles commercial" when he gets knocked out after the deal is made to get him back to his old self in three days.
    • The Critic plays "You're the Best" by Joe Esposito over a montage of Peter training.
    • During the "When You're Alone" scene, the Critic says, "You know, it's at times like this that I really wish the pirates of Neverland would collide with the Pirates of the Caribbean," leading to a scene where Hector Barbossa shoots Maggie dead to the cheers of the Neverland pirates.
    • During the scene where Jack destroys the clocks, a clip from Rachel Leigh Cook's drug PSA plays, specifically the part where she starts wrecking the kitchen.
    • During the climax of the movie, Peter cuts a hole in the pirates' sail, causing the Critic to comment that Edward Scissorhands couldn't possibly cut as well on the fly.
    • When Jack doesn't recognise Peter as his father, the Critic comments, "I guess he got those hypnotic glasses on loan from Clark Kent."
    • The Critic calls the Lost Boys "The Goonies of the Carribean".
    • Tootles flying around laughing is compared to a similar scene in Mary Poppins.
  • Something Else Also Rises: The Critic says, in regards to the flashback where Peter sees Moira for the first time, that Peter's tights "suddenly become a lot tighter".
  • Subverted Catchphrase: "I'm the Nostalgia Critic, and I don't believe in fairies."
  • Take That!:
    • Critic says that the writers of Lost wrote Peter's backstory in regards to the numerous plot holes in it.
    • Also, this:
Hook: (to Peter) Death is the only adventure you have left!
Critic: (imitating Hook) I've seen your future in movies, there is little promise.
    • And:
Hook: (to pirates) Gentlemen, I'm afraid I have decided to cancel the war.
Critic: (imitating Hook) I will instead run Ernest Goes to Camp. (cue the sound of the pirates being disappointed)
    • During the final battle, when Peter introduces himself to a pirate who reacts by jumping out of a window, the Critic says, "Hey, if Robin Williams came up to me and said he was Peter Pan, I'd jump, too."
    • The Critic is disgusted by Maggie saying that her mother Moria "looks like an angel", comparing it to the scene in The Phantom Menace where Anakin asks Padme if she's an angel.
    • When Inspector Good quickly leaves the children's hospital, the Critic imitates him saying, "I'm off to ruin Disney's Tarzan."
  • We Want Our Jerk Back!: Critic says that he wants the old, jerkish Peter back when he sees the new, childish Peter.
  • Why Don't You Just Shoot Him?: The Critic cites three opportunities where Peter should've killed Hook — when Rufio was killed, when Peter disarms Hook, and when Peter rips Hook's wig off.

"MY Jack?"
