Review: Febriary 26, 2013

Focus: Does Romeo and Juliet Suck?

This editorial focuses on:

  • Adults Are Useless: As noted by the Critic, had the adults simply let Romeo and Juliet's affair mature and not impress their inter-familial hatred on them, these young lovers would have been able to test each other's chemistry and judge whether they're meant to be.
  • An Aesop: The Critic notes that the story is not only a good love story, but also a lesson on hate and how it can negatively effect a lot of people.
  • Alternate Aesop Interpretation: According to the Critic, the true lesson of the play was less about the doomed love affair of the titular couple as it is about the devastating effects of the hatred between their families, which includes turning their naive romance into a Forbidden Fruit and thus preventing it from maturing.
  • Call-Back: Critic refers to his first editorial by criticizing Romeo and Juliet's chemistry together, saying that even Edward and Bella had a better-working romance.
  • Dating What Daddy Hates: Critic acknowledges that the prejudices and hate the Montagues and Capulets have for each other only make Romeo and Juliet even more eager to love each other.
  • Satellite Love Interest: The Critic notes that the two are never shown have anything in common, and their conversations are all about their own emotions.
  • Take That!: At the end, Critic says that every adaptation of the story is good, but calls the 1996 film version a "very good try" at destroying it.
