Recap / The Nanny S 3 E 14 Oy To The World

Go To

The animated Christmas Episode. Fran plans to take Brighton to the homeless shelter so he can help the less fortunate and learn the True Meaning of Christmas. Before they get there, Fran, Brighton, and Chester are miraculously transported to the North Pole, where Santa Claus needs some help Saving Christmas from C.C. the Abominable Babcock.

This episode received a solo VHS release in 1996. On DVD, it is, of course, included with the rest of season three.

  • Affectionate Parody: Of animated Christmas Specials like Frosty the Snowman and How the Grinch Stole Christmas!.
  • And You Were There: Everyone at the North Pole resembles a regular Nanny character. Maxwell is Santa, Niles is the lead elf Elfis, C.C. is C.C. the Abominable Babcock, and Maggie and Gracie briefly appear as background elves. Fran manages to avoid equating C.C. the Abominable Babcock to her obvious counterpart:
    Fran: What's her problem?
Elfis: Well, she's only happy when she's making everyone around her miserable.
    Fran: Sounds like my mother.
Elfis: She's two thousand pounds with arms like a wrestler.
Fran: Oy, she is my mother!
  • Animated Episode: The episode uses the same art style and character designs as the Animated Credits Opening, except the kids are drawn a little older to account for how much they had aged since the beginning of the series.
  • Aside Comment: Several of these, in typical Looney Tunes fashion.
  • A Day in the Limelight: For this episode, Brighton is Fran's Kid Sidekick and Chester is her Snarky Non-Human Sidekick.
  • Demoted to Extra: Maggie and Gracie, especially compared to the starring role given to their brother.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: C.C. the Abominable Babcock gets very irritable once every twenty-eight years.
    Elfis: She's very regular.
  • Everyone Is Christian at Christmas: Played almost entirely straight. There's only one passing reference to Fran not being Christian. It occurs when she finds out that the real Santa looks like Maxwell:
Fran: Gee, if I knew he looked like this, I might have converted.
  • Formula-Breaking Episode: An animated fantasy episode in a live-action sitcom.
  • Gravity Is a Harsh Mistress: Fran, Brighton, and Chester run off a cliff and only fall after looking down.
  • The Grinch: C.C., of course, but also Brighton.
  • Hammerspace: At one point, Niles pulls out a tea set, which he had apparently been storing here.
  • Headphones Equal Isolation: As Fran and Brighton are being dragged by Chester, they pass by Maggie's room, who doesn't hear them since she's listening to some music on her headset.
  • Ice Palace: C.C. the Abominable Babcock lives in one.
  • Impact Silhouette: Created by Fran, Brighton, and Chester when they land in the snow at the North Pole.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: A marginal example. The episode is included on the season three DVD but good luck seeing it broadcast.
  • Medium-Shift Gag: The whole episode is animated. Also, as a kind Lampshade Hanging, the episode opens with animated Fran watching live-action Fran on TV.
  • Or Was It a Dream?: The whole trip to the North Pole seems to be a Dream Sequence, but then it turns out that Brighton's Character Development is still intact and Chester still talks.
  • Remember the New Guy?: Near the beginning of the episode, Chester chases a cat up the Sheffields' staircase. The Sheffields have never previously been shown owning a cat, and this cat never appears again.
  • Saving Christmas: C.C. the Abominable Babcock is blowing up a storm that threatens to cancel Christmas.
  • Suddenly Voiced: Upon arriving at the North Pole, Chester speaks with the voice of Pamela Hayden.
  • Zany Cartoon: The kind of cartoon The Nanny makes, naturally, with Toon Physics aplenty.
