Recap / The Mask S 2 E 2 Goin For The Green

Go To

After being humiliated by the Mask during an unveiling of his latest statue, Mayor Titon recruits Colonel Beauregard Klaxon, a Southern businessman to create The Edge City Games as a distraction from The Mask’s antics. What Mayor Titon doesn’t know is that Colonel Klaxon is using this opportunity to store nuclear waste underneath the stadium where the Edge Games are played which results in the creation of a swamp monster.

Tropes:

  • Cassandra Truth:
    • When Peggy uncovers the truth behind Colonel Klaxon's illegal toxic waste dumping, she connects to the sudden appearance of the swamp monster, but Stanley is too frustrated to even listen to her. And when she tries to warn Kellaway and Doyle, the former dismisses her due to her job at the "Just the Facts, Really" tabloid.
    • The Mask tries to warn the stadium about the swamp monster, but due to Mayor Tilton's "Ignore The Mask" campaign, nobody listens to him.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Klaxon may have been behind the nuclear waste dumping, but even he didn't know it was going to result in a ravaging swamp monster.
  • Engineered Public Confession: When Peggy learns the truth of what Colonel Klaxon is up to, she's caught by his goons and confronted by him. However, Peggy is close enough to a control panel that she turns on the room's security camera, broadcasting his Evil Gloating to the entire stadium, exposing the fact that he knew the swamp ground underneath the stadium was unstable due to his dumping of nuclear waste, and his plan to pin the blame for the stadium's inevitable collapse on The Mask.
  • Food as Bribe: When Stanley is attacked by the swamp monster, Milo refuses to get him the mask due to his previous order to not give it to him until after the Edge City Games, he promises that he'll cook Milo "a nice juicy steak with sautéed mushrooms, all wrapped in bacon". This is enough for Milo to go get the mask.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: The Mask despite being a genuine troublemaker is as always a good hearted man and he tries to warn people about a swamp monster attacking but gets ignored which leaves him to be annoyed.
  • Just Ignore It: After his humiliation Mayor Titon starts a campaign to tell people to ignore The Mask which works too well as The Mask tries to warn people about a swamp monster but they decide to continue ignoring him.
  • Only Sane Man: The Mask of all people becomes this as he is the only one to see something bad is about to happen while everyone stays focused on the games which shows that The Mask can be sane when he knows he needs to be especially if everyone else decided to be idiots by ignoring the signs.
  • The Scapegoat: Colonel Klaxon was going to pin the blame for the stadium's collapse (due to unstable ground that he caused by his toxic waste dumping) on The Mask. Fortunately, this plan is exposed by Peggy, clearing The Mask's name.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: The Mask as always changes his appearance which he turns into a gargoyle, the Statue of Liberty, a modern boxer, a whaler, a basketball player, a pom pom girl, an athlete, a cavalry officer, starlet, a cowboy, a commander, Tarzan, an exterminator, a modern boxer again, a boy scout, an Italian mama, a baseball player, Colonel Sanders, and a basketball player again.
