Recap / The Looney Tunes Show S 2 E 25 Best Friends Redux

Go To

The twenty-fifth episode of the second season of The Looney Tunes Show, and the sequel episode to "Best Friends".

When Bugs meets up with Rodney Rabbit, his childhood friend, Daffy becomes jealous of Rodney, and tries to use Witch Lezah's time portal to go back in time to ensure that he is Bugs' oldest and best friend.

This episode features "Long-Eared Drifter", the final Merrie Melodies music video.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Accessory-Wearing Cartoon Animal: Rodney wears a pair of glasses, and like Bugs, a pair of White Gloves.
  • An Aesop: The "Long-Eared Drifter" Merrie Melodies music video is a song about how important it is to eat healthy.
  • Alliterative Name:
    • Rodney Rabbit.
    • "The Long-Eared Drifter" Merrie Melodies music video features Black Bart.
  • Alternate Timeline: By going back in time to stop Bugs and Rodney from ever meeting, Daffy accidentally makes it so that he also never meets Bugs. Bugs meets Daffy while he's mailing a letter to Rodney, so by stopping the two from ever meeting, Bugs doesn't have a reason to go to the post office, and, in turn, he never meets Daffy. So when Daffy greets Bugs in the new timeline, he has no idea who he is, and neither do their neighbors since they only knew about him since he was friends with Bugs; from their perspective, Daffy is a complete stranger who somehow knows who they are.
  • Book Ends: A series-long example; the series began with "Best Friends", and ended with this episode in production order, as "Super Rabbit" was aired as the series finale instead.
  • The Cameo:
    • Nasty Canasta appears in the "Long-Eared Drifter" Merrie Melodies music video as the owner of a dirty taco stand.
    • Charlie Dog also appears in the "Long-Eared Drifter" Merrie Melodies music video as one of the citizens who watches the showdown between the Long-Eared Drifter (Bugs) and Black Bart (Daffy).
    • In the epilogue, Egghead Junior appears as one of the campers in the Tadpole Cabin.
  • Canon Foreigner: Rodney is one of the rare characters on the show who isn't human but has no connections to the original cartoons (or any cartoons before this show) and he was invented solely for this one episode.
  • Character Development: In the series' first episode, "Best Friends", Daffy knew absolutely nothing about Bugs, including his obvious catchphrase, incorrectly guessing "I don't do Mondays!" when the two appeared on Besties. In this episode, when Daffy travels back in time, he is able to recognize the young rabbit as Bugs when he hears him say "Eh, what's up Doc?"
  • Continuity Nod: When Daffy returns to the present after ensuring that Bugs and Rodney do meet after all, Rodney asks Bugs if the carrot peeler he invented really paid for all his possessions, referencing the events of a previous episode, "Peel of Fortune".
  • Food Porn: Done with yogurt parfait in the "Long-Eared Drifter" Merrie Melodies music video.
  • Fun with Flushing: Discussed; in this episode's prologue, Bugs tells Daffy that the next time he doesn't like a message someone leaves on his answering machine, he should just press the delete button instead of flushing the answering the machine down the toilet. Later, when Bugs gets a message from Rodney, Daffy decides to flush Bugs' answering machine down the toilet.
  • Friendship Favoritism: When Rodney comes to visit Bugs, Daffy begins to question who Bugs' best friend really is, though Bugs insists that adults can't really have best friends, but rather a whole bunch of friends. Daffy decides to travel back in time to ensure that he is Bugs' oldest and best friend. Also in this episode, Daffy has his own top nine best friends list, which, in order from nine to one, are Porky, Granny, a stranger who pardoned him in the restroom of Pizzarriba, Carl (A stranger he met in a Phoenix Airport), A tie between Pete Puma and Marvin the Martian, Speedy Gonzales, Big Fat Rooster (Foghorn Leghorn), Tina, and Bugs.
  • Heel–Face Turn: In the "Long-Eared Drifter" Merrie Melodies music video, Black Bart turns to the titular character's side after trying a yogurt parfait, and starts to eat healthy like him.
  • I Do Not Like Green Eggs and Ham: In the "Long-Eared Drifter" Merrie Melodies music video, Black Bart refuses the titular character's yogurt parfait and calls it trash. After being pressured by the Drifter to give it a try, he finds out he really likes the yogurt parfait.
  • My Future Self and Me: When Daffy travels back to the present after ensuring that Bugs and Rodney never meet, a young Porky follows him, and he meets his adult counterpart.
  • New Friend Envy: Rodney comes to visit Bugs, which causes Daffy to become jealous. Daffy goes so far as to travel back in time to prevent Rodney from ever meeting Bugs. This in turn creates an alternate timeline where Bugs never sent a letter to Rodney, and thus never randomly met Daffy while sending said letter in the first place, forcing the duck to go back in time and fix his mistake.
  • Nutritional Nightmare: In the "Long-Eared Drifter" Merrie Melodies music video, Black Bart takes the Pretty Little Filly (Lola) to Nasty Canasta's Dirty Taco stand. Nasty cooks his tacos in lard and puts bullet shells in them.
  • Pet the Dog: In the epilogue, when Daffy travels back in time to return the younger Porky to his proper time, he has the younger Porky join the younger Bugs and Rodney in the Shark Cabin to make him cooler so the present-day Porky can truly be his second best friend.
  • Point of Divergence: It is revealed in this episode that Bugs becoming friends with Rodney played a huge factor in Daffy becoming friends with Bugs. Bugs and Daffy first met each other in a post office when Bugs was delivering a letter to Rodney. When Daffy went back in time to prevent Bugs and Rodney from becoming friends, he effectively Ret-Gone himself from Bugs' memory, as Bugs never went to the post office to deliver Rodney's letter. In extension, Daffy Ret-Gone himself from most of his friends and neighbors' memories as well, since they only knew about him since he was friends with Bugs.
  • Set Right What Once Went Wrong: When Daffy travels back in time to prevent Bugs and Rodney from meeting each other, it causes Bugs to never have met him, and for all his friends and neighbors to never have met him as well. Thus, he has to go back in time again to make sure that Bugs and Rodney do meet each other after all.
  • Sequel Episode: To "Best Friends", the series' first episode.
  • Show Within a Show: Allen Irwin's Underwater Team in a Submarine, a show Daffy watches and how he recalls how he and Bugs first met.
  • Wingding Eyes: In the "Long-Eared Drifter" Merrie Melodies music video, pieces of candy form the pupils of Black Bart's eyes when the singer says that Bart had diabetes in his eyes.
