Recap / The Lion Guard S 2 E 20 Undercover Kinyonga

Go To

Summary: The Lion Guard meets a color-changing chameleon who is willing to spy on Scar out in the Outlands.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Artistic License – Biology:
    • Chameleons can't just change colors rapidly on their own accord like Kinyonga does.
    • Fuli seemingly roars at Nne and Tano in Hakuna Matata Falls. Cheetahs in real life can growl, purr and chirp, but not roar. Although it can sound more like a loud growl than a roar.
  • Ascended Extra: Chameleons have been a background species in previous episodes. Here, one is a named character who plays an important role to the plot.
  • Chekhov's Skill: The Guard learning about camouflage gives them the idea to disguise themselves as plants and rocks, so they can sneak into the Outlands to rescue Kinyonga from the skinks and later launch a surprise attack on Janja's clan at Hakuna Matata Falls.
  • Gosh Dang It to Heck!: When Kion tells Janja he is going to "kick his tail", its pretty obvious that is an animal version of a less friendly saying.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Featuring a heroic lizard in this episode allows a chance to see the skinks in action, taking on a foe that is about their size.
  • A Dog Named "Dog": Kinyonga is Swahili for "chameleon."
  • Exact Eavesdropping: How Kinyonga learned about Scar; she just happened to be at the wrong time when the skinks talked about him.
  • Hollywood Chameleons: Kinyonga can change her color to her will, even turning invisible.
  • "I Am" Song: "Now You See Me, Now You Don't" by Kinyonga.
  • The Infiltration: Since the vultures will attack Ono on sight and/or call for reinforcements if he tries to scout the Outlands, Kinyonga volunteers to spy on Scar for the Guard. Though she manages to stay invisible long enough to overhear Scar's plan, the skinks detect her due to the shadow she casts. This prompts the Guard to sneak into the Outlands to save her, by taking cues from her camouflage skills.
  • Mass "Oh, Crap!": The skinks and, later, the hyenas all freak out when the Guard surprises them with their new camouflage tactic.
  • Oh, Crap!: Kinyonga when she's detected by the skinks. And when she ends up in a dead end while fleeing from them.
  • Patrolling Mook: The Outland skies are secured by the vultures, who have to be avoided because they are on high alert, and they will use lethal force if they get sight of anyone scouting the Outlands. If not, they can alert their allies.
  • Reptiles Are Abhorrent: Unlike the skinks or Ushari, Kinyonga is nowhere close to this.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Once at the Lion Guard's vicinity, the skinks wisely make a break for it while forgetting about the chameleon they've cornered.
  • Serious Business: The reason Kinyonga insists helping the Guard spy on the Outlanders is because she too discovered that Scar has returned having heard from the skinks.
  • Weak, but Skilled: How's a chameleon able to ward off a bunch of ruthless skinks for so long? By using her reflexes, stealth, and wits of course.
