Recap / The Lion Guard S1E5 "Eye of the Beholder"

Go To

Ono is the "Keenest of Sight" and his powerful gaze has come through for the Lion Guard on a number of occasions, but when he loses vision in one of his eyes he questions his value to the team. In spite of his handicap, can Ono prove his worth to the Guard...and to himself?

This episode contains examples of:

  • A Day in the Limelight: For Ono.
  • Aside Comment: A series of comments by Bunga about Ono losing his sight, not having his sight, etc.
  • Balloon Belly: The hyenas have these during "Outta the Way" after feasting on the animals of the Pride Lands.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Happens after Ono helps Kion dodge a charging wildebeest in Janja's dust storm:
Kion: Good eyes, Ono! Keep 'em peeled for Janja and his clan!
    Ono: Peeled eyes? Ewww!
  • Disney Acid Sequence: Occurs during "Outta the Way".
  • Family-Unfriendly Violence: The fall Ono takes after getting blinded in the eye is pretty painful.
  • Forgot About His Powers: Averted. Despite getting hurt in one of his eyes, he remembers that he is not completely useless to the Guard, as he can still fly.
  • Handicapped Badass: Ono, naturally.
  • Heroic BSoD: Ono falls into one while he's out of action.
  • Impairment Shot: Ono's blurry vision.
  • Mood Whiplash: The Guard (minus Ono) race off to save the zebra from Janja and his gang, they exclaim their usual Pridelands catch phrase. The camera then shows us a shot of Ono looking sad before saying:
Ono: Well, most of the Lion Guard.
  • Shout-Out: To the original film. Scar was about to say that the truth was in the eye of the beholder before Simba cut him off with a paw on his throat.
  • Single-Episode Handicap: Ono when he loses his vision in one of his eyes. He's fine by the end of the episode, of course.
  • Temporary Blindness: Or in this case, half-blindness.
  • Title Drop: While Rafiki is trying to figure out what is wrong with his artwork, he mentions that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder."
  • Villain Song: Janja and his two hyena lackeys sing "Outta The Way", describing on how to be rid of the Lion Guard so they could feast on anything they want.
    • Dark Reprise: They sing it again after they trap the Lion Guard.
