Recap / The Librarians S2 E02 "and the Broken Staff"

Go To

After Prospero's escape from New York, the Librarians determine to get themselves a step ahead of the sorcerer. Unfortunately, he's found a way inside the Library...

Tropes:

  • Adaptation Displacement: Two In-Universe examples:
    • When Frankenstein's Monster appears, Ezekiel thinks he can hold it off with fire but the Monster is unaffected.
      Ezekiel: It's afraid of fire.
Flynn: In the movies, not the original text.
      Ezekiel: There's a difference?
    • Due to the many times they've been merged in adaptations, Stone needs to point out to Eve that the Red Queen and the Queen of Hearts are two different characters.
  • All Your Base Are Belong to Us: Prospero and Moriarty break into the Library via the original manuscripts of their stories.
  • Ax-Crazy: The Queen of Hearts, natch.
  • Bad Ass Boast: Jenkins gets a magnificent one...
Jenkins: Well, my point is though... I've been threatened, tortured, bullied, bothered, grilled, menaced long since before you two were even a glimmer in your writers' ink-pots. I will never lead you to your staff
  • Batman Gambit: Flynn pulls one on Prospero in the climax. Flynn tells Prospero that he'll never tell him which tree is the Tree of Knowledge... at which point Prospero feints in one direction, and Flynn reacts as if to stop him. Convinced he's found the Tree of Knowledge, Prospero snaps a branch off to forge into a new staff, but then Flynn flings Zeus' Lightning Bolt from his jacket and incinerates the tree. From Prospero's view, the Tree of Knowledge has been destroyed, so he takes his leave of the Library since there's nothing left for him to gain. Too bad the real Tree of Knowledge was the young evergreen sapling next to the big old Tree of... something important, probably.
  • Cooperation Gambit: Moriarty pulls one on Eve in response to her invoking of You Can't Fight Fate. It would make both his and Eve's lives easier, he reasons, if she were to return Ariel to him: Eve has sufficiently distracted Moriarty from helping Prospero locate the Tree of Knowledge, and Moriarty would certainly face real danger from his summoner were he to return empty-handed. Were he to go over the cliff after Ariel, he points out that some scholars believe that when Sherlock Holmes survived The Final Problem, it was really Moriarty who came back and took Holmes' place, so even if she did send him over the edge, there was no way to know if it would kill him or not (though he does concede her point about how him going over a cliff might not be the smartest idea for him). Eve agrees to the temporary truce, returning Ariel to Moriarty and going back to help Flynn.
  • Hidden Depths: Eve once played Lady Macbeth in high school.
  • Internal Reveal: Jenkins tells the Librarians about how the Library seems to have Come Back Wrong.
  • Kill It with Fire:
    • Ezekiel tries to stave off Frankenstein's monster with a lighter. He is not amused, and Flynn has to point out to Ezekiel the difference between Hollywood's version of Frankenstein and the original novel.
    • Flynn later incinerates the supposed Tree of Knowledge with Zeus' Lightning Bolt to prevent Prospero from using it.
  • Needle in a Stack of Needles: The Tree of Knowledge is hidden in a forest.
  • Read the Freaking Manual: Ezekiel, to his chagrin, is the only one who has read the Library's security manual.
  • Refugee from TV Land: Prospero summons the Queen of Hearts and Frankenstein's monster to delay the Librarians as he seeks the heart of the Library.
  • The Scottish Trope: The Trope Non-namer is invoked when a particular puzzle requires the recitation of a single word that has never been spoken on a stage.
  • Sesquipedalian Loquaciousness: Frankenstein's monster is rather wordy in the original text.
  • Sherlock Scan: Moriarty deduces that Jenkins is a Knight of the Round Table.
  • Stealth Pun: Eve, Flynn, Moriarity, and Prospero are literally looking for a tree in the forest.
  • Swiss-Cheese Security: Eve lampshades that this is the third time the Library has been broken into during her tenure as Guardian.
  • Why Don't You Just Shoot Him?: In a way. While the Librarians debate how to best thaw the ice around a trapped Jenkins, Eve grabs the nearest blunt object and shatters the ice block.
  • You Can't Fight Fate: Eve dangles this over Moriarty's head when she dangles Ariel's pocket watch over the edge of a cliff. Moriarty scoffs at Eve that he'll merely be able to dive after the watch to retrieve it if she drops it, but Eve reminds him that going off the edge of a cliff is what kills him in his story.
