Recap / The Librarians S2 E01 "and the Drowned Book"

Go To

The four Librarians all answer the call to solve their own specific mysteries...all at the same place. Meanwhile, something is amiss with the Library...

Tropes:

  • Almighty Janitor: The museum's janitor is none other than the magician Prospero.
  • Big Storm Episode: A hurricane is forming in the middle of New York City. It was caused by Ariel.
  • Bond Villain Stupidity: Averted as Moriarty refuses to give details on his plans.
Moriarty: Monologue my scheme like some penny dreadful villain? Give me some credit.
  • Came Back Wrong: The Library. Rooms are rearranging, and artifacts are disappearing. Jenkins is mystified.
  • Gilligan Cut: Flynn assures Eve that the villagers will never know they were here, and we cut to Eve and Flynn being chased by an angry mob.
    Flynn: They know we're here!
Eve: They probably noticed when you made the volcano erupt.
  • Give Me Back My Wallet: Ezekiel steals Flynn's wallet; Eve notices instantly.
  • Inventional Wisdom: While looking for the Sun Room, Flynn opens the door to a room containing a hive of giant bees.
Eve: Why do we even have that door?
  • Literal Metaphor: The Sun Room contains a star captured decades ago before it wrecked Earth.
Jenkins: What else would one have in a Sun Room?
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Prospero was weakened for centuries as a mortal man until the return of magic thanks to the Serpent Brotherhood gave him enough power to work his schemes. Also, the gang fail to put the clues together to realize what's happening before Prospero unleashes a monster storm.
  • Noodle Incident: Einstein and Feynmann captured a star using Roswell tech and locked it away either in the Library, or a room connected to the Library (it's not made clear).
  • Poor Communication Kills: Flynn and the younger Librarians insist on each pursuing their individual missions separately, ignoring Baird's requests that they work together as a team. If they had pooled all of their information right off the bat, they could have made the connection to Prospero immediately instead of only figuring it out after he'd obtained everything he needed from right under their noses. They acknowledge this failure at the end of the episode.
  • Putting the Band Back Together: After months of working independently from each other, the three LITs decide that they work best together and team back up - not without a few stumbles.
  • Refugee from TV Land: This episode introduces the concept of Fictionals, characters from fiction who are brought to life in the real world. As luck would have it, both fictionals introduced are decidedly villainous.
  • Screw Destiny: Prospero has found a way to rebel against the story he was brought from, reclaiming his drowned book and set on recovering his staff next.
  • Sherlock Scan: Flynn and "Professor Worth" each deduce the identity of the other one in this way.
  • Sure, Let's Go with That: Flynn accuses Worth of being Sherlock Holmes. Rather than admit to being Moriarty, he immediately agrees.
  • Viewer Gender Confusion: In-Universe. Flynn loses track of his thoughts for a while trying to remember whether Ariel was originally male or female in the play.
  • Whole-Plot Reference: Invoked by the villain of the episode, Shakespeare's Prospero. As a Fictional, he gains power when circumstances resemble his own story, so he plans a months long gambit to create such a situation in order to restore his magical powers.
