Don't You (Forget About Me)

You Give Love a Bad Name
- Break Up Song: For both Bender/Claire and Andrew/Allison

- Hero vs. Villain Duet: How the kids see their conflict with Vernon.
- Villain Song: Vernon's verse
Come On Allie
- Positive Friend Influence: Brian convincing the rest of the group to comfort Allison.
Don't Stop Believing
- Comically Missing the Point: Lampshaded in the show, Carl is singing a song about "junkies and whores" but is applying the lyrics to his fundamentalist faith. He also misses the point of his religion, focusing on the rules and not the most important rule - to love.
- Song of Prayer: The Janitor uses the song as a call to action regarding his take on Christianity.
The Living Years
- Grief Song: For Claire's parents
- Ode to Family: Claire sings about her complicated feelings towards her family now that they're dead.
- Parental Love Song: Of a more honest, complicated variety.
Love Will Lead You Back
- Breaking the Fourth Wall: The main quintet (save for Bender) take selfies with and interact with the audience, and they all acknowledge that they're singing a song (see This Is a Song below)
- Musical Number Annoyance: Bender doesn't get into it as much as the rest of the cast, but is eventually persuaded to join.
- Brian: Sing with us, Bender, sing about love.
- Bender: Fine, but I'm not taking any fucking selfies.
- Summon Backup Dancers: Brian gets the rest of the kids to join spontaneously.
- This Is a Song: See Musical Number Annoyance above, the singers all know they're singing.
When Doves Cry
- Almost Kiss: Allison goes in to kiss Andrew, but he rebuffs her due to their strained post-breakup relationship and his developing feelings for Bender.
- Amicable Exes: Allison and Andrew seem to get along better now that they're broken up, with her becoming a Shipper on Deck for him and Bender.
- Unresolved Sexual Tension: Allison is still attracted to Andrew, who somewhat reciprocates but his attentions have shifted.
Hurts So Good
- Sex Is Evil, and I Am Horny: The Janitor, big time
Wise Up
- Melancholy Musical Number: The kids reach their lowest point, just about giving up hope.
Johnny B Goode
- Canon Foreigner: Sung by Marty McFly from Back to the Future
- Minor Character, Major Song: Doc and Marty show up for this and one more song, never to be seen again
Back in Time
- Irrelevant Act Opener: The time travel plot is pretty much over after this scene.

Hazy Shade of Winter
- Drugs Are Bad: The lowered inhibitions cause Claire to kiss Bender and Allison to provoke him about Andrew.
- Drugs Are Good: The group comes together and bonds while high.
- Erudite Stoner: The beautiful, poetic lyrics in the song are the characters' stoned ramblings.
- Everybody Must Get Stoned: The entire cast, other than the Vice Principal, get high together.
- Higher Understanding Through Drugs: Allison's verse seems to imply some poetic breakthrough. Also, The Janitor figures out a balance of his faith and its message to love others only after he gets high.
- Stoners Are Funny: The high characters result in some hilarious moments.
Broken Wings
- Anguished Declaration of Love: Andrew comes to terms with his love for Bender
- This Is a Song: Allison directly suggests Andrew sing "a beautiful ballad" to come to terms with his feelings for Bender.
Shout
- "Gaining Confidence" Song: For Brian
- Quarreling Song: Bender and Brian
Dead Man's Party
- Death Song: Or at least nearly, as this song is the penultimate time he's seen onstage and it's clear he's not long for this world. While he's vocally in denial, it becomes clear that he's accepted his limited time left.
- Ghost Song: Well, zombie
- Villainous Advice Song: Averted, as Vernon gives actually good advice to Bender about accepting himself, making it clear that he's not the villain the kids see him as.
- Villainous Lament: Serves to humanize the zombified Vernon, allowing him to bond with Bender
If You Leave
- Eleven O'Clock Number: A big number just before the end, when the two lovers finally unite.
- Final Love Duet: For Bender and Andrew
- Shipper on Deck: The rest of the cast, for Bender and Andrew
- Janitor: Aren't they the cutest motherfuckers you've ever seen?
- The Big Damn Kiss: While they usually end the duet in a hug, the final performance saw Andrew and Bender finally kiss.
Everybody Wants to Rule the World
Don't You Forget About Me Reprise
- Triumphant Reprise: This version is much happier than the angsty opening.
