Recap / The Interns S 6 E 13

Go To

Lobanov didn't take Phil's relationship with Olga well (to elaborate, he became not just angry, but violently, destructively angry), and it's better for Phil to avoid him until Semyon calms down, or it would end badly for both of them. Gleb suggests Kupitman. Meanwhile, Lobanov asks Bykov to send him somewhere where he would not interact with Phil, otherwise it surely would end in blood. Bykov sends him... to Kupitman. Fortunately, they somehow manages to avoid each other (or even learn about each other's presence), right until Bykov takes Lobanov away (and Semyon decides to just sleep in Lyuba's nurse room)... and Phil, warned by Gleb, runs there himself. Eventually, this leads to Semyon busting Phil discussing his plans with Olga, and hitting him in the face in rage. But after that, his rage finally dies.

Electrician Ivanovich once again tries to hit on Lyuba... who can't stand him. He eavesdrops her discussion with Varya about what she dislikes in him, and tries to address those issues... only to enrage her more when she realises why he changed so suddenly (not that she reacted positively at him to begin with). Varya finally convinces Lyuba to give him a chance... a chance he screws up by getting wasted.

Bykov is angry at Varya making yet another moronic mistake, and decides to test her skills personally, by pretending to be her patient (whom Varya must examine with ultrasound). Initially, everything goes well, but then Varya notices something anomalous, which looks like a tumour. Bykov ignores her and considers this to be her failure, but Varya is sure: it's something more sinister, and tells about this to Kisegach. Kisegach worries that Varya may be right, but how to force Bykov to check his health? He stubbornly refuses any medical examinations. Kisegach has an idea: she would offer Bykov sex on a gurney, which would lead him into the trap; and then they would bring Bykov (tied to this gurney) and finish examination. Plan fails instantly, because Bykov just leaves her no chance to warn Kupitman (and then Kisegach gets too distracted to think about anything else). They finally manages to examine him once he falls asleep... and reveals that Varya really did screw up, mistaking a blood vessel for a tumour, which makes Anastasia angry at her. Fortunately, Varya was already punished with a night shift, so she has a full night to train her skills...

This episode provides examples of:

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Electrician Ivanovich decides to flirt with Lyuba more actively, but she still despises him (not in the last turn because he tries to blatantly suggest sex). He manages to eavesdrop Lyuba and Varya's discussion, about what exactly Lyuba dislikes in him, and decides to try and change. Then he gets wasted and ruins everything.
  • The Alcoholic: Turns out that Ivanovich's alcoholism is directly related to how he'd met Lyuba in the first place: he had stole some medical alcohol (for which she was punished in his place). Long romantic story, indeed... And in the end, alcoholism proves to be stronger than his love for Lyuba, since he fails his only chance to convince her that he is something more than a drunkard.
  • All for Nothing: Ivanovich fails to change for the better and remains a drunkard. Lyuba refuses to deal with him any further.
  • Casual Kink: Kisegach suggests to trick Bykov into the trap by inviting him to have sex on a gurney; which would be just the time when Kupitman steps in and helps with binding Bykov. When they stops discussing plan, Kupitman asks if they do this sort of play often, to Anastasia's anger. Bykov actually likes this; so much, in fact, that he leaves Anastasia no time to react and warn Kupitman (and later she gets too distracted to do anything).
  • Flipping the Bird: When Kupitman reminds Kisegach how any attempts to force Bykov to undergo medical examinations tends to end, one of flashbacks shows how Kisegach and Kupitman attempted to force Bykov to adhere a fluorography, only for him to instead provide them with X-ray of him showing them middle finger. This is after they barely managed to bring him here, by making him drunk.
  • Gone Horribly Right: Bykov likes the idea of having sex on a gurney so much, he decides to not go anywhere and just do it right here and without any further preparations, preventing Kisegach from telling Kupitman anything.
  • He Cleans Up Nicely: When Ivanovich learns what specifically Lyuba dislikes in him, he cleans his hair, changes into a good costume and brings her flowers, all of this while being sober and gentle, which extremely surprises her. Though he almost screws up when he makes a mistake of inviting her into a bar, before correcting to restaurant... and then she realises that he just eavesdropped her. This almost works anyway, but he still ruins everything, by getting drunk again and proving Lyuba's distrust in himself right.
  • I'm Standing Right Here: Olga discusses her plans for this evening with Phil (and the fact that Semyon still can't find them, thankfully), not knowing that Lobanov is in the same room, only divided by a glass wall (he was sleeping, but now awakes). Lobanov comes out and hits Phil into face.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: The plan to restrain Bykov by tricking him into the trap under pretence of erotic play works a little too well, and Kupitman accidentally overhears Bykov having sex with Kisegach (thankfully, he didn't see anything); now he needs something really strong, or he wouldn't be able to sleep tonight.
  • Know-Nothing Know-It-All: It's unknown how Varya received the good marks for ultrasound testing back in the university, as she completely screws up when she tries it on Bykov as part of the training task (and before that, on a real patient, which was Bykov's motivation to organise that training in the first place), and scares Kisegach shitless with a "tumour" which in the end turns out to be a mere blood vessel. This once again proves that good marks are not everything.
  • Preemptive "Shut Up": When Kisegach voices her plan to trick Bykov by promising him sex on a gurney, she immediately orders Kupitman to shut up and don't ask questions.
  • Red Herring: Did you believe that Varya really found something dangerous and helped to save Bykov? Nope, she did screw up during her test, and Bykov was completely right when gave her 5 points for her work (out of 100), since when Kupitman and Kisegach manages to calmly examine Bykov during his sleep, they learns that this was not a tumour, but merely a blood vessel (which they shouts at Varya when she asks again).
  • Shipper on Deck: Varya suggests Lyuba to try and give Ivanovich a chance, since he loves her so much. Lyuba follows her advice... but then Ivanovich snaps to his usual alcoholism, and Lyuba angrily leaves him alone.
  • Tranquil Fury: Lobanov calms down just enough to stop breaking furniture around himself, and speaks in creepily calm voice, but he makes it clear to Bykov: if he finds Phil, he would kill him (which is why he needs to be assigned somewhere far from him). In the end, Lobanov does find him, and quietly hits Phil in the face. After this, his anger suddenly dissipates, he even may speak calmly with Phil. Phil considers this to be deserved, and forgives him for that.
  • Unstoppable Rage: According to Gleb, when Semyon returned home yesterday, he was in such mindless rage, he nearly ruined their apartment. If he finds Phil now, it would probably end badly.
