Recap / The Interns S 6 E 12

Go To

Bykov notices his photo on Kisegach's work table, and he doesn't like it. He takes the photo away under excuse that he doesn't like when some random people looks ont it... and later that same photo gets noticed by Kupitman. Bykov tells him that it's "for a board of fame", and Kupitman would not be on it. When Kupitman complains to Kisegach, she decides to use this against Bykov, by creating this "board of fame" for real... with Kupitman's photo being there, much bigger than anything surrounding it, but not Bykov's. What is it, Bykov? Now you suddenly want your photo to be publicly accessible?

Phil thinks that he and Olga can no longer keep their relationship hidden from Semyon: he would know sooner or later, and better deal with this now. Olga initially disagrees, but Phil manages to convince her. So, they must tell him the truth, but it should do Olga, not Phil; Semyon may hurt Phil, but wouldn't dare to harm Olga. But when she tries, she immediately starts doubting how he would react, and fails to tell him anything. Phil then tries to come himself, but each time he finds Semyon with something dangerous within reach: darts, knife... When Phil fails, too, Olga suggests to do this together. This works surprisingly well, since Semyon manages to hold his anger... right until they leaves, after which he explodes.

Gleb meets his old friend; he now owns a night club, and invites Gleb to work with him. Which means — abandoning medicine altogether. Gleb considers this to be the right decision — and so is everyone else in the hospital, even his mother, who thinks that he did the "right decision" and realised that "medicine is not for him"; such lack of faith actually offends him. When they starts openly celebrating his departure, not even bothering to wait until he actually quits, Gleb finally snaps and shouts at them that he wants to become a doctor. Everyone seems to be disappointed... and only Bykov congratulates him on this decision, this time — sincerely.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Chekhov's Gag: When everyone already forgets about Bykov and his conflict with Kupitman about the photos, he suddenly placed his (another) photo (even bigger than Kupitman's) on the wall opposite from the "board of fame"; and yes, the photo itself is purposely designed to emphasis his ego.
  • Last-Second Word Swap: Phil can't go and drink with Semyon, because he has a date with Ol... ehm, a visit to dentist. Fortunately, Lobanov doesn't suspect anything.
  • Overly Long Gag: Olga imagines several ways how she can tell Semyon about her now being with Phil. Each ends with Lobanov getting angry (progressively quicker, down to the point where he explodes before she even mentions Phil) and hitting a table with his chair until the chair breaks. Then Semyon appears for real before she finds an optimal way, and all she can do is to sheepishly say that her chair had broken.
  • Pet the Dog: Bykov is the only one to congratulate Gleb on choosing the medicine after all; while he makes it sound like an insult, Gleb sees that it's really a congratulation.
  • Secret Relationship:
    • Relationship between Bykov and Kisegach is still secret (only Gleb, Semyon and Kupitman knows). Main point of their plot is that Kisegach wants to stop hiding this from the other people, while Bykov wants to maintain a status quo. In fact, Bykov's insistence on keeping this hidden leads them to quarrel.
    • Phil and Olga keeps their relationship hidden from Semyon (Olga's ex-husband, who specifically warned Phil to not touch her), but roles are reversed, comparing to Bykov and Kisegach's situation: it's Phil who wants to stop lying to Semyon (especially since Semyon now considers him to be his friend, specifically because he "stopped" dating Olga), while Olga thinks that it would be better to wait some more time. Though Phil manages to convince her to do as he asks when he mentions that by continuing to lie to him, he would look like a total jerk.
  • Take a Third Option: Phil can't tell Semyon about dating Olga, he would be hurt; Olga can't tell about dating Phil, she's too afraid (not for herself, but rather for Semyon's reaction); instead, the two tells him together.
  • Tempting Fate: Phil and Olga finally reveals to Lobanov that they are now in relationship. He takes this surprisingly well (previously, they feared that he may possibly injure Phil for this, and there's a good reason for this). When they leaves, Phil says that he's surprised by Semyon being so calm... cue Semyon throwing a chalice strong enough for it to break a glass and stuck in the hole.
  • Troll: When Kupitman finds Bykov's photo which Bykov previously took away from Kisegach's office (he didn't like her placing it on her work table, because he prefers to keep their relationship hidden), and asks him what is it, Bykov tells him that this is for a "board of fame" Kisegach plans to create. And no, Kupitman would not be put there, because he didn't deserve it (but if she decides to create a board of shame, he would be the first candidate, that's for sure!). Kupitman considers this to be unfair and comes to Kisegach. When Kisegach realises just what he wants, she decides to use this situation against Bykov, and creates this "board of fame" for real, with a big photo of Kupitman... but without a photo of Bykov. Why? Because Bykov previously told her that he "didn't like when some random people looks on his photos" as excuse to take away his photo from her working table (that same one Kupitman had seen later). Later Bykov creates yet another photo, even bigger than Kupitman's (photo itself also perfectly emphasises Bykov's ego), and places it on a wall opposite from the "board of fame".
  • What the Hell, Hero?: When everyone, even his friends, starts to "congratulate" him on quitting medicine for working at the club, not waiting until he does leave, or even confirm that he plans to leave, and throws a "departing party" for him, Gleb snaps:
Gleb: Why you did this? Bykov is one thing, but you... Why no one bothered to ask me, "Gleb, did you think this trough?" Why no one had even a quick thought, to at least try and convince me to stay? No one of you ever bothered to ask me first. Not even tried. You just said "farewell", and that's it. What if I want to stay? Maybe I just like you? Maybe I just want! To become! A doctor?! Such variants are not interesting for you? Thank you, friends. Enjoy your meal.
  • Wouldn't Hit a Girl: Olga insists that it must be her to tell about her relationship with Phil to Semyon: he may injure Phil, but wouldn't dare to hurt Olya. But she's still afraid of him overreacting, so she tries another option instead of telling directly.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Right after Gleb calling everyone out on being jerks, Bykov, of all people, finds him and tells him why the only thing that matters is that Gleb himself believes in himself (granted, he still manages to make it sound insulting, but it's Bykov):
Bykov: I should warn you upfront, this is not a talk between father and son, rather, this is a talk between an adult and clever man, and not so adult and... you know... No one doubted that between the medicine and work at a club, you would chose the club. No one. Except you. And that's all that matters. If you leave the hospital, I would be happy, but don't do this just for me. Stay yourself. Stay an egoist, and do what you like; but keep in mind: if you stay, you would receive a one week of night shifts, for betraying my expectations, and a debt for wasted banquet.
  • Your Approval Fills Me with Shame: Gleb was ready to quit medicine altogether, but when everyone started "congratulating" him on doing the "right choice", he realised that this means that no-one believes in him, and suddenly joy turns into sorrow. When they pushes him far enough, he snaps and calls them out on having that little faith in him.
