Recap / The Interns S 3 E 17

Go To

Bykov's daughter, Alisa, decides to pay her father a visit. Or, rather, she wants to stay with him in Moscow... and become a doctor, like her father. But Bykov does not want such fate for her (it involves perpetual stress and poverty, and leaves you without any trace of personal life), so he tries to dissuade he out of it. Emphasis on "tries", because every singe attempt backfires. When he tries to lock her in the morgue to snap her out of the idea to become a pathologist, she instead decides to try another specialisation. When he tries to give her an excursion to demonstrate her how boring it would be, she meets Kupitman and gets drunk.

Lobanov's new patient is a fortuneteller... who is sick of Lyuba constantly bothering her; she comes here to heal, not to work! Lobanov thinks that she is just a charlatan (and tells this to her face). To get rid of Lyuba, the fortuneteller lies to her that her "fate" is to become Semyon's wife... but this backfires, because Lyuba starts bothering her even more often, wanting more details. This forces the fortuneteller to cooperate with Lobanov to scare her off.

Varya tries to obtain the concert tickets, but they are out of stock. Gleb gifts her with one... but now Varya thinks that this is his scheme to "win" her back, and he already has another for himself. So, she gifts this ticket to one patient... only to find out that there's no a second ticket. Now she must somehow take that one back. And for this she needs Gleb's help...

This episode provides examples of:

  • Follow in My Footsteps: Inverted. Bykov wants Alisa to become anyone but a doctor; because Russian doctors are living in perpetual stress and poverty, and without any trace of personal life. When those arguments don't work, he tries to mention that she would quickly grow tired of her patients' stupidity... to which she replies that she decided to be a pathologist. Instead of arguing further, Bykov just locks her in the morgue... and then accidentally forgets about her for some time. When he remembers several hours later, Alisa says while she's still willing to be a doctor, she certainly wouldn't be a pathologist.
  • Gone Horribly Wrong: Semyon's patient lies to Lyuba that she would marry Lobanov, hoping that Lyuba would leave her alone (the patient is a fortune teller). It makes Lyuba visit her even more frequently.
  • Like Father, Like Son: Alisa acts a lot like Bykov... when he was young, enthusiastic and talkative. And now she wants to become a doctor, like him, which is the reason why she's here — to observe, and learn on practice.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Gleb really did have a second ticket all along, and just lied to Varya about it. He reveals it only when the first one becomes unavailable: even if his plan wouldn't work anymore, it's not the reason to screw Varya over as well.
  • The Matchmaker: Subverted. Lobanov's patient (a fortuneteller) tries to "match" Lyuba with Lobanov, but she does it not out of any good intentions, but rather to get rid of Lyuba, who annoys her with her questions. This backfires, since now Lyuba bothers her even more often, forcing the fortuneteller to cooperate with Semyon.
  • Papa Wolf:
    • Bykov would do everything in his power to "protect" his daughter, Alisa, from a "grave mistake" of becoming a doctor. Including locking her in the morgue when she decides to become a pathologist because it is "cool" (she snaps out of it when she spends several hours here).
    • When Alisa gets drunk "thanks" to Kupitman, Bykov becomes extremely angry, and only Alisa and Kisegach's presence stops him from attacking Kupitman here and now. But, as it turns out, she just stole Kupitman's cognac (and he is not happy about this).
