Beef and Wolf meet their hero Tusk Johnson, a mountain man who had his own TV show, but Beef soon realizes that Tusk isn't as great he believed he was when he starts doing shady activites. Meanwhile, the other Tobins finds out that Kathleen recorded episodes of the '80s prime-time soap Dynasty and they get hooked on it.

Tropes:

  • Accent Upon The Wrong Syllable: Judy is excited to discover the tapes labelled “Dy-NASTY” before she realizes she’s pronouncing it wrong.
  • Action Dad: Beef leaps into action without hesitation both times Wolf is in harm’s way (first by cutting Wolf out of the net he’s stuck in that Tusk is trying to put in the water, and second when Wolf gets trapped on a decomposing log over a ravine).
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: While Beef is trying to find Wolf and Tusk, he runs into Doris who tells him that Tusk is drunk, Wolf is about to plummet to his death, and she couldn't get any service on her cell phone.
  • Broken Pedestal:
    • Beef soon realizes that Tusk Johnson isn't the great mountain man he believed he was. The turning point is when they see a golden eagle's nest and Tusk considers catching the eggs and selling them, which Beef knows is poaching an endangered species. Then Tusk tries to operate the trawling net on Beef's boat despite not being allowed for the season and Wolf gets tangled in it and Beef has to rescue him. After this, Beef asks Tusk to leave.
    • Wolf ends up losing faith in Tusk after he nearly got Wolf killed by tricking him on getting stuck on a decomposing log over a ravine in an attempt to steal the aforementioned golden eagle eggs.
  • Cannot Tell Fiction from Reality: When the family watches Wolf and Beef fighting about Tusk on a dinner, being on withdraw from Dynasty, they briefly forget that they're real people and even clap when the fight is over, only then does Honeybee realizes that the fight is real and follows Wolf.
  • "Cavemen vs. Astronauts" Debate: Tusk and Doris spend the entire night arguing over how many The Fast and the Furious movies there are, whose sister is hotter, and if the butt is the elbow of the back.
  • Couch Gag: The boat in the opening is named MacGrouper. (Also counts as an Actor Allusion to Will Forte, who plays Wolf.)
  • Crazy-Prepared: Because Beef takes their Tobin Family Film Friday seriously, he keeps a box of pre-approved VHS recorded movies ready to go in the event of his untimely death or when he's not available.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Moon threatens to sue Beef into the ground for taping over the sixth season of Dynasty.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Beef is an avid hunter and fisher, but this episode demonstrates that he won't poach any endangered species (besides the illegality of it, he considers it an affront to the wilderness herself) and he won't use any fishing method that is out of season and that he doesn't have a license for.
  • Feel No Pain: Tusk suffered through a lot of hypothermia that he can't feel anything in his left upper thigh and has Moon stab his left leg with a fork to prove it, but he does feel pain when Moon stabs the wrong leg.
  • Gilligan Cut: Tusk invites his camerawoman, Doris, over to talk and he promises Beef they'll be quick and professional. Then it cuts to them arguing over ridiculous things past midnight.
  • I Let You Win: During the survival skills challenge, Beef saw Wolf struggling and lets himself lose so he doesn't feel disappointed.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The title is a shoutout to "Dust in the Wind" by Kansas.
  • Taped-Over Turmoil: When Judy, Ham, Moon, and Honeybee are about to watch another episode of Dynasty, the episode immediately cuts to a documentary about freight trains that Beef forgot having recorded, leaving the others unamused. To make it up to them, Beef buys a DVD set for seasons six through nine.
  • That Came Out Wrong: When Tusk wants Beef and Wolf to have an outdoor competition between them, Wolf said an outdoor competition with him, his dad, and Tusk is his fantasy threesome, which Honeybee responds with "Babe, no."
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Beef assures Wolf that, while Tusk may have used him, he's still special due to his kindness and he always sees the best in everyone.

♫ He lives in the woods and survives on the land
He never met a beast that he couldn't tame
He'll take down a bear, fight a wolf in his lair
If you live in the wild then you know his name
It's Tusk Johnson, mountain man
Living in the woods just because he can
It's Tusk Johnson, mountain man
Did we mention that Tusk has a sidekick, Dan. ♫
