Tropes

  • All for Nothing: The firm spends all night aggressively vetting Lara's story, but just as she's finally convinced them that she's telling the truth, she decides to drop the case, realizing that she'll be grilled even worse by the media if she goes through with suing.
  • Dissonant Serenity: Lara relates the story of her rape by Joe Kent very calmly. Diane comments on it.
  • Hypocrite: Diane thinks Lara's story is riddled with inconsistencies, mostly because she's a fan of Joe Kent, the feminist icon politician she's accusing of sexual assault. Will points out that the previous year they had a rape case in which he criticized the victim's story for similar inconsistencies and Diane defended her, attributing the inconsistencies to shock.
  • Sheep in Sheep's Clothing: Lara informs the firm that Cary referred her case to them after the State's Attorney declined to prosecute. They at first assume Cary wants to sabotage them by having them take a phony case against a beloved and powerful politician and ruin their reputation, but it turns out he believed Lara's story and genuinely felt Lockhart, Gardner & Bond would be the best firm to help her in a civil suit.
