Tropes

  • Actually Pretty Funny: Both Peter and Alicia have this reaction to Owen's joke about Peter being homophobic.
  • Bait-and-Switch: The first part of the episode has Eli scrambling to rescue campaign contributions after Alicia's brother Owen is filmed accusing Peter of homophobia. It turns out the donor in question cares less about Owen talking out of his ass than about the fact Peter was photographed holding a pro-Palestinian book.
  • Category Traitor: The head of the LGBT group Eli talks to wouldn't put it past him to support a client who was pro-Palestine.
  • Death Glare: Discussed. Owen brings up the "Alicia stare", which you get if you don't live up to her expectations.
  • Jack the Ripoff: The actual Northbrook Sniper is caught partway through the episode after a fourth shooting, but S.A. Childs, who is running for reelection, tries to save face by telling the media that the suspect is a copycat.
  • Malicious Misnaming: The new investigator keeps refering to Kalinda as Kaleela, to let her know he knows she used the name Leila before.
  • Mistaken for Gay: When Eli asks Peter if he is a homophobe, Peter assumes Eli is coming out to him.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Owen privately fesses up to Peter that he accused him of homophobia to hurt him politically as payback for hurting Alicia, and threatens to kill him if he does it again. In response, Peter makes a much longer monologue accusing Owen of abandoning Alicia when she was hurting during the scandal, which clearly hits a lot harder than Owen's death threat. Consequently, Owen later apologizes to Alicia for not having her back over the past 18 months.
  • Serendipitous Survival: The Lockhart/Gardner crew figure out that the lone man among the Northbrook Sniper's victims was a Murder by Mistake, explaining the anomaly in the Visible Victimology that partly led to Wyatt Stevens, Sr.'s prosecution: Carl Landers was actually aiming for a nearby woman, but she bent over right before he fired and he hit the man behind her instead.
  • Serial Killer: The real Northbrook Sniper, Carl Landers, found women who were Geminis on a dating site and then sniped them.
  • Serial Killings, Specific Target: Glenn Childs' theory on the Northbrook Sniper killings was that Wyatt Stevens' father shot his estranged wife and then killed two other people to throw the police off-track. Unfortunately, Wyatt Sr. was innocent and being accused of his wife's murder drove him to take his own life.
