Recap / The Goldbergs S 9 E 17 The Strangest Affair Of All Time

Go To

A Plot: Jane Bales (last seen hooking up with Formica Mike) attempts to make a power grab at the Ottoman Empire while Murray's out of town, forcing Beverly to retaliate.

B Plot: Adam is thrilled to learn that Dave Kim also plans to attend NYU, and they immediately plan to be roommates. Barry and Erica worry that Dave will sink Adam's university social life before it begins, and conspire to separate them.

  • Brutal Honesty: When Dave learns that Erica and Barry want to sink his NYU plans just because he's an unpopular nerd, he takes a moment to list their own flaws (Erica dropping out, Barry's buffoonery, etc.), and then insults Adam for considering their advice even when it would knowingly hurt their friendship.
  • Call-Back: Adam's first go-to move to apologize to Dave Kim is yet another Say Anything... boombox-on-the-front-lawn scene, but Dave threatens to turn on the sprinklers before the song even starts.
  • Conlang: While mourning the loss of his friendship with Dave Kim, Adam decides to get rid of some reminders of their time together, including a notebook in which the duo made up their own language based on R2-D2's beeps. It's at this point that Erica and Barry pity Adam enough to get the two back together, and decide to do so by learning just enough of the language to apologize to Dave Kim in it, making it clear to him that it's a genuine effort.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: After Adam's convinced by his siblings to drop Dave Kim as his NYU roommate to save his social life, Adam's university-assigned roommate is a intimidating G.I. that terrifies him, while Dave Kim's assigned roommate is the nephew of Ernie Hudson.
  • Lethal Chef: When Beverly goes to Mike to complain about Jane, she learns that Mike's willing to let her do whatever she wants because he loves everything about her...except her cooking, which he's unable to stomach even after a half-hour of attempting it. This leads to what narrator!Adam calls "the strangest affair of all time" when Beverly invites Mike to her home and cooks him dinner in order to regain control of the Ottoman Empire. After Jane admits that she just wanted to be more involved in Mike's life, as she genuinely cares about him and doesn't want the relationship to be based purely on her sex appeal, Beverly offers to teach her how to cook in exchange for leaving the business alone, and Jane's made something edible by the episode's conclusion.
  • Lipstick Mark: Parodied when Jane finds a stain from Beverly's food on Mike's collar, which is treated as proof of them "cheating".
  • Rule of Pool: As a parody of the famous Cat Fight on the lily pond scene from Dynasty, Bev and Jane fall in the country club pool and start fighting.
  • Shout-Out: The episode starts with Beverly preparing for "Dynasty (1981) Night", and both she and Vic immediately compare her current situation with Jane to the show. Their story line climaxes with a spoof of one of the show's Signature Scenes, as Bev and Jane fight in a pool.
Vic: It's like Dynasty but with smaller hats!
