Recap / The Goldbergs S 8 E 22 The Proposal

Go To

Geoff has finally decided to propose to Erica, but a series of comic misunderstandings threaten to derail the big event.

  • Call-Back: Geoff uses the Goldberg's beach house from "The Dating Game" to propose to Erica.
  • Full-Name Ultimatum: Parodied by Barry yet again, as he calls Geoff "Geoffrey Middle-name Schwartz."
  • Grew a Spine: Geoff proves he's done this by looking Beverly in the eye and firmly telling her that he will propose to Erica alone without her interfering. Bev is genuinely impressed, as are everyone else.
Carla: Yowza, Erica snagged herself a man.
  • Idiot Plot: invoked Mentioned by Brea when she says all romantic comedies are about people making ridiculous mistakes that could be solved quickly. Adam then shows her how such misunderstandings could happen in real life, at least in his family.
  • Meta Guy: Adam spends the whole episode pointing out romcom tropes to Brea as they happen, to the point that Brea gets upset that Adam's just letting the tropes continue instead of taking action, and forces him to clear everything up when it seemingly hits the lowest point.
  • Minor Flaw, Major Breakup: In a non-romantic version, Murray is upset with Lou Schwartz because at a barbecue he didn't order cheese on his hamburger but then added the cheese afterwards, and threatens to forbid the proposal because of it. Lou ends up tearfully apologizing later, which everyone just finds awkward.
  • One Dialogue, Two Conversations: With half the cast knowing that Geoff's proposing to Erica, and the other half assuming that Barry's proposing to Joanne, this occurs a few times.
  • Sustained Misunderstanding: As part of the Rom-Com nature of the episode, half the cast end up thinking that Barry was going to propose to Joanne, which Joanne wouldn't accept, though she does enjoy being asked. Their attempts to convey this to the other half of the cast make them think Erica didn't want a proposal from Geoff. It takes Adam being forced out of his observational Meta Guy role to actually explain things to everyone to make the situation clear.
  • Tears of Joy: Naturally, Beverly overdoes her bawling after the proposal. Later that evening, Murray sheds some himself, and for good reason.
Murray: My peanut's getting married, and he's a great guy.
  • Wham Episode: Geoff decides to propose to Erica, and she accepts.
  • Wild Teen Party: Erica comes to the beach house with Geoff thinking he was going to propose. Instead, thinking that Erica would refuse due to misinformation, he invited the JTP, along with Johnny Atkins and Carla, for a party. The Goldbergs and Schwartzes are not pleased when they arrive and find Johnny and Carla making out.
  • With This Ring: Geoff wants Matt Bradley to hold on to the ring because he's the most responsible member of the JTP; Barry, of course, just snatches it from his hand and promises to hide it so well no one else will find it, which Geoff fears will lead to Barry losing it. His hiding place turns out to be under Erica's pillow, where Bev finds it, setting off the rest of the plot.
