Recap / The Goldbergs S 8 E 21 Alligator Schwartz

Go To

A Plot: Erica fears that Geoff has moved on from their breakup.

B Plot: Once Adam recalls his pact with Dave Kim, where neither will attend prom if they don't have dates, Adam decides to find Dave a date.

  • Big Damn Kiss: After spending the episode trying new things and deciding what he loves, Geoff ends up confessing to Erica that he still doesn't love anything more than her, and the two of them make out on the Goldbergs' lawn.
  • Bros Before Hoes: At the end of the B-Plot, Brea and Murray help Adam realize that the night he'd been looking forward to with a date was something Dave Kim had been looking forward to as well, and the two guys decide to spend the rest of the evening together instead of worrying about relationships.
  • Call-Back: Geoff specifically brings up him missing Erica and Lainey's performance in the previous episode when expressing his relationship anxiety to Barry.
  • Contrived Coincidence: Played with. The reason Barry's lie about Geoff's new Australian girlfriend isn't immediately unraveled is because the name he picked, Paula Hogan, is also the name of an actual student at their college. It at first seems that Barry had just made up a name based on Paul Hogan (the actor who played "Crocodile" Dundee) and got lucky, but it later turns out that Barry was already familiar with the real Paula, and didn't even realize how similar her name was to Paul's until it's pointed out to him.
  • Description Cut: Immediately after Beverly promises to Erica that she'd stop getting involved in her relationship issues, it cuts to her at Paula Hogan's dorm room trying to intimidate her into breaking things off with Geoff.
  • Drunk with Power: On Prom Night, Dave flaunts the fact that a cheerleader asked him out, even insulting Adam's now-lower social status...until Adam gets fed up and admits he bribed the cheerleader into dating Dave.
  • Girlfriend in Canada: When Geoff asks Barry to avoid letting Erica know how miserable he's been, Barry (who had recently gotten obsessed with "Crocodile" Dundee) tells her that Geoff has an Australian girlfriend. It convinces Erica, but Beverly (who wants Erica and Geoff to get back together) instantly suspects a lie.
  • High-School Dance: Adam's plot is centered around Prom.
  • Kissing Cousins: A non-romantic version, in that Murray admits to Adam that he didn't have a date to his own prom and ended up going with his cousin.
  • Love Triangle: One of Adam's early attempts to get Dave a date is to contact Carla, who's back together with Johnny but expresses interest in watching the two of them fight over her. However, it never actually comes to pass.
  • Relationship Revolving Door: Part of what had been Implied two episodes ago is now made explicit: Carla and Dave Kim did break up. (Carla and Johnny getting back is still only implied because of what is said up in Love Triangle, plus the fact only he ended up going to the prom.) However, Carla explicitly states she misses the former since he was the first boyfriend to have treated her as a human being.
  • Shout-Out: Barry spends the entire episode obsessed with "Crocodile" Dundee, even dressing up in his iconic outfit while helping Geoff come up with ways to live life to the fullest.
  • Sticky Fingers: The Tag shows Johnny Atkins and Mr. Woodburn comparing all the stuff they looted during Prom festivities, including food, a cornucopia decoration, and the backdrop for commemorative photographs.
