At a sleepover, when Libby gets her first period before Molly does, Molly feels out of sync with her best friends.

Tropes

  • An Aesop:
    • Everyone grows at different rates and not everyone can be expected to change at a certain age, so it's best not to feel pressured about your future and enjoy your youth while you can.
    • No matter how grown-up you may seem, you still have that inner child. Libby and Andrea join Molly in roleplaying with her stuffed animals for the "Puppy Prom" sleepover game.
  • Commonality Connection: While it seems Libby and Andrea have nothing in common, which Molly points out, they're able to bond due to them both having their periods, and once they do bond they learn they both read the Blood Moon books.
  • Embarrassing Damp Sheets: It's never explicitly said, but implied this is the third grade sleepover "incident" Libby's still haunted by.
  • Entendre Failure: When Libby nervously tells Molly that it's her "time of the month" Molly, unfamiliar with menstruation metaphors, has no idea what that means. When Libby tries saying that her "Aunt Flo" is visiting, Molly remarks that she doesn't remember meeting Libby's Aunt Flo.
  • First Period Panic: Libby freaks out upon realizing she had her first period in the bathroom.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: After Libby gets her first period, Molly gets jealous when she and Andrea are able to bond with each other over their periods and she feels left out.
  • Grocery Store Episode: The B-plot for Pete and Scratch involves them going out to the grocery store late at night to buy a cart full of menstrual products for Libby, which continues to overflow as Scratch baits Pete into buying ice cream and frozen pizza.
  • Growing Up Sucks: Molly clearly doesn't want to let go of her childhood, as she's shown crying when she gives her toys one last hug during the song montage, and she only put on a mature demeanor to fit in more with Libby and Andrea.
  • It's All Junk: Molly buries all her toys in the backyard so she can be more grown-up, but can't bear to part with them without one last goodbye hug.
  • Never Trust a Trailer: The previews made it look as though Molly was going to get her first period as well when Pete reveals a banner hung in the kitchen that reads "You're the best. Period." and he and Scratch are shown shopping for menstrual products. While Pete initially thought Molly got her period when she announced they need menstrual products, she then clarified it was Libby in need of them and he and Scratch were just helping Libby by buying them for her.
  • Pet the Dog: Andrea shows off her character development by being supportive of Libby getting her first period, offering a spare set of pajamas and genuinely bonding with her.
  • Running Gag: Darryl keeps trying to sell goods, only to be offered a trade for some other kind of goods, to which he replies "I can make that work."
  • Show Within a Show: Andrea and Libby watch a supernatural teen drama called Blood Moon.
  • Shout-Out: One of the bear plushies owned by Molly clearly resembles Freddy Fazbear.
  • Slumber Party: The main setting is a sleepover at the McGee residence between Molly, Libby and Andrea.
  • Tampon Run: Pete goes to the grocery store to get tampons for Libby because Sharon ran out of hers. Not knowing what Libby's needs are, he ends up emptying the whole aisle into his shopping cart.
  • Uncanny Valley Makeup: In an attempt to fit in with the more ladylike Libby and Andrea, Molly puts on a lot of makeup to look more grown-up. It looks as though she smeared it on her face and the sight of made-over Molly even shocks Libby and Andrea.
  • Your Makeup Is Running: The mascara that Molly puts on her eyes in an attempt to appear more grown-up ends up running when she finally breaks down about her insecurities.
