Recap / The Flash 2014 S 7 E 4 Central City Strong

Go To

Central City's attempts to rebuild from Eva's attack are threatened by the return of Abra Kadabra.

Tropes:

  • Armor-Piercing Question: Barry gets two on Abra. First, asking him if he's run the calculations to see if destroying Central City in the past will truly bring his family back with him admitting he knows it won't. Then Barry stating that even if it does work "how will they feel knowing you annihilated an entire city in their name?"
  • Back for the Dead: Abra/Phillipe.
  • Brutal Honesty: Allegra is quite open with Iris about why her initial article stinks. This eventually even gets her a promotion.
  • Call-Back:
  • Captured on Purpose: Abra lets himself get caught and handed over to ARGUS so that he can steal what he needs from them.
  • Central Theme: You can't ignore your trauma, you have to face it. Appropriately, the episode ends with Iris giving a speech to the support group.
  • The Comically Serious: The ARGUS agent that Cisco talks to is Literal-Minded and Sarcasm-Blind, to Cisco's frustration.
  • Death Dealer: Abra kills a random civilian with playing cards.
  • Easily Forgiven: The team seem oddly forgiving in regards to Philippe, who tragic backstory or not still murdered a civilian in cold blood. Flash even seems ready to let him be on his way before the monster drops in and kills him.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Abra calls Cisco "Mecha-Vibe".
  • Foreshadowing: Caitlin's early complaints about her headache are the early signs of her splitting from Frost.
  • The Ghost: Abra mentions a villainous force called the "Chronarcs" that will supposedly trouble Barry in the future.
  • Giant Space Flea from Nowhere: After Flash convinces Phillipe to stop his plan, some sort of giant monster appears, killing the latter and injuring the former.
  • Given Name Reveal: Abra Kadabra reveals his real name to be Phillipe.
  • Guilt Complex: Barry reveals that he has been blaming himself for not recognizing Iris's mirror duplicate for the past few months, and subsequently is also quick to blame himself for falling for Abra Kadabra's scheme.
  • Happy Ending Override: Phillipe learned through Cisco's memory ring that he settled down since his last encounter with the Flash. Unfortunately, his wife and son were erased from existence Post-Crisis, apparently as a Ripple Effect of Barry surviving the event.
  • Heel–Face Door-Slam: Immediately after being talked into a Heel–Face Turn, Abra was killed by a hulking abomination.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: There is still a warrant out for Frost.
  • Human Pincushion: Abra Kadabra's first victim getting riddled all over his body with cards.
  • Kick the Dog: Abra Kadabra killing the civilian after teleporting in with a bunch of playing cards was just completely unnecessary cruelty.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Cisco starting to talk about Laurel and Mia only to cut himself off seems like a nod towards the cancellation of their spinoff.
  • Literal Split Personality: Appears to happen to Caitlin and Frost at the end of the episode.
  • Naïve Newcomer: Chester, being added to the main cast for this arc, begins to fill this role for Team Flash.
  • No-Sell: Whatever the monster is, it completely absorbs an antimatter bomb capable of destroying a city, as well as Barry's lightning throw.
  • Not Me This Time: When the ground starts shaking right after Barry talks Abra down, the latter quickly points out that he's not doing it.
  • Rank Up: Iris promotes Allegra from intern to staff writer.
  • Red Herring: The earthquakes earlier in the episode was expected to be Abra Kadabra returning to the present. However, it was the work of a humanoid creature.
  • Redemption Equals Death: After being talked down from destroying Central City, Abra seemed well on his way to becoming a possible ally to Team Flash. Unfortunately, he was then killed attempting to stop the unknown creature.
  • Revenge by Proxy: Abra intends to destroy Central City to make Barry suffer for accidentally erasing his family from existence.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Cisco and Chester are arguing in what order to watch the Star Wars films, specifically Machete or Release Order.
    • Later, Cisco is seen being frustrated because Chester keeps beating him at Fortnite.
    • The A.R.G.U.S. officer Cisco chats with sounds way too familiar.
  • Sore Loser: Cisco didn't like how Chester beat him at Fortnite.
  • Spotting the Thread: Steven and Alice from the therapy group immediately spot that Iris isn't well during the attempted interview and suspect that she has been inside the Mirrorverse too.
  • Stepford Smiler: Barry and Iris are both shown to be this throughout the episode, though the façade cracks later on.
    • Iris initially seems fine, but it's clear she's having difficulty facing the trauma from her ordeal in the Mirrorverse.
    • Meanwhile, Barry has been taking Iris on romantic getaways all over the world, which is revealed to be partially due to his guilt over not seeing through the Mirror Iris charade sooner.
  • Talking the Monster to Death: Like with Eva, Barry manages to talk down Abra from his plans.
  • Title Drop: There are T-shirts and a sign that say Central City Strong. Barry and other people also say it.
  • Trojan Prisoner: Abra wanted A.R.G.U.S. to capture him so he could get the materials to finish his antimatter bomb from their headquarters.
  • Vagueness Is Coming: Abra hints at two details for Barry's future. One is that he will gain an obsession with the future, and the other is that a future enemy of his will be the Chronoarcs.
  • Wham Shot: At the end of the episode, Caitlin walks in on Cisco, and Frost is literally right behind her.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Just when Barry gets through to Phillipe, he gets killed by the mysterious creature.
