Recap / The Facts Of Life We Get Letters

Go To

Mrs. Garrett receives the shock of her life when an old friend accuses her of having an affair with her late husband.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Call-Back: Natalie's hostile attitude towards Mrs. Garrett following the accusation is a result of her discovering her father cheating on her mother four seasons earlier in "The Affair". She even references it.

  • Easily Forgiven: Mrs. Garrett is quick to forgive Gwen despite everything that happened.

  • Everyone Hates Mimes: Nobody in the episode responds positively to Andy performing as a mime at the store.

  • Evil Former Friend: Gwen to some extent is this. Although she and Mrs. Garrett make up at the very end.

  • Jerkass Ball: All of the girls sans Jo, but especially Natalie. When they hear from Andy about Gwen's accusation, they're not defensive of Mrs. Garrett at all. When Natalie confronts her about it, even though she has no business doing so, she treats Mrs. Garrett as if she did have an affair and acts as though Mrs. Garrett owes her an explanation about the situation. This is rather jarring since Mrs. Garrett has been their friend and supporter for years, but then a total stranger they've never met before accuses her of something horrible and instead of dismissing it, they adopt an anything's possible attitude.

  • Love Letter: This is Gwen's supposed proof that her husband cheated with Mrs. Garrett. But Mrs. G proves that love letters were not meant for her, but rather for Gwen. He only sent letters to Mrs. Garrett so that she could critique them as he wanted someone else's thoughts on them.
