Tropes present in this episode:

  • Distracted by the Sexy: Daisy, in a skimpy red bikini, pretends to have car trouble in order to flag down the guys transporting the slot machines so Bo and Luke can hijack them.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: Considerable evidence that this is the first episode, including Daisy in a very skimpy bikini (especially by late 1970s standards), Rosco's abrasiveness toward the Duke boys, cursing and swearing, bawdy and disorderly behavior more rampant at the Boar's Nest, a more fully-staffed Sheriff's Department... and the fact that this episode was filmed in Covington, Georgia. (The first five episodes were produced in Georgia.)
  • Enemy Mine: Rosco revealing that for 20 years, he had been an honest lawman ... and in fact, he was one of the most respected if not feared sheriffs in Georgia. However, a defeated bond issue — largely due to the Dukes successful campaign against it — turned him bitter, particularly since a large portion of his pension was lost.
  • Mugged for Disguise: Daisy escapes from jail by asking to use the "little girls' room", then acquiring the female guard's uniform in this manner.
  • Pursued Protagonist:The Dukes of Hazzard may be the only series where the very first scene is a protagonist carrying a vital MacGuffin (although it only figures into that first episode) being chased by … two other protagonists. For added humor, the pursued character is driving a (stolen) police car while his pursuers are in a race car and are just trying to catch up to their friend to get the story behind why he stole first their other car and then the cop car he is driving.
  • Welcome Episode: "Welcome to Hazzard County," declares balladeer Waylon Jennings. And we're treated to — what else — a car chase, with scenes used in the first-season opening credits (and a few clips used for the rest of the run).
