Recap / The Dreamstone S 02 E 13 Return Of The Nightmare Stone

Go To

Original Air Date (UK): Apr 22, 1992

The Nightmare Stone is discovered and the Urpneys beat the Rufus and Amberley to it. Urpgor's attempt to rid Zordrak of the Nightmare Stone gets the whole of Viltheed launched into the sky. Rufus and Amberley are rescued and return to the Dream Maker.

Tropes featured in the episode:

  • All-Powerful Bystander: The plot awkwardly forces the Noops into repeatedly struggling to steal the Nightmare Stone, while the more experienced and capable Wuts are, for whatever reason, just waiting for them outside unless an emergency occurs. The Dream Maker and Albert are forced to stay at home, though the reason is never explained.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Pildit and Wildit perform this with the Noops twice over.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Urpgor once again disposes of the stone when it costs him his job. He is caught out this time however.
  • Enemy Mine: Urpgor directs the Noops in how to get rid of the Nightmare Stone when they are imprisoned.
  • Fatal Reward: Played with. When the stone is collected, Urpgor is predictably thrown out, his promised "reward" is that Zordrak will hold himself from using this trope full on and executing him outright.
  • I Lied: Zordrak assures Urpgor's job will be preserved for helping retrieve the stone (unlike the previous episode) and what's more he will be rewarded for his efforts. When the mission is a success, he immediately kicks out Urpgor, revealing his "reward" is that he will hold himself from turning Urpgor into stone instead.
  • Invincible Incompetent: Similar to the first Nightmare Stone episode, Rufus and Amberley spend most of the episode ineffective, getting by through a number of convenient chances and the Wuts saving them repeatedly.
  • The Main Characters Do Everything: Why the Noops are entrusted to do everything while the Wuts sit as mere backup is never explained.
  • The Pawns Go First: Unusual heroic case. The Noops are sent to get the stone first, the more capable Wuts staying dormant up until each point something goes wrong.
  • Protagonist-Centered Morality: Zordrak brings back mortal penalties for the Urpneys for this one episode, with the lives of Blob's men on the line for their mission to get the Nightmare Stone, which has the sole purpose of, as expected, giving nightmares. The heroes ham up the stone's return and express their disgust at the Urpneys trying to make off with it and escape with their lives.
  • Sequel Episode: To "The Nightmare Stone".
  • Sympathy for the Hero: Frizz and Nug look noticeably creeped out when the guardian birds attack Rufus and Amberley.
  • Taken for Granite: Zordrak threatens to do this to the Urpneys should they fail. Apparently Urpgor's "reward" for getting the stone is that Zordrak will resist the urge to do this to him.
