Chapter 67: Successor Struggles

Tropes That Appear In This Chapter:

  • Be Yourself: The general lesson of the chapter.
  • Bilingual Bonus: Hiccup is repeatedly called pintosotranslation  by the women in the village, blissfully unaware of what it means.
  • Character Tic: Turns out that like Luisa, Mirabel's eye twitches when she's freaking out about something.
  • Children Are Innocent: When Manuel notices Mirabel being less humorous, he immediately thinks that he did something that warranted this change. It's here that Mirabel realizes how much the others prefer her to be herself.
  • Clueless Chick-Magnet: Mirabel finds Hiccup teaching dragon trivia to a group of women, oblivious to the fact that they are more concerned with his appearance than what he's saying.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: When Hiccup mentions his dad and how his advice lacks a certain gravitace when it isn't spoken by "the man himself", Mirabel gets the idea to ask Stoick for advice.
  • Growing Up Sucks: Mirabel internalizes the idea that she has to be more like Alma to take over her position. This means abandoning her various hobbies, take everything seriously and stop being the upbeat Mirabel everyone likes. The whole family has to convince her that they don't want another Abuela and she can be a leader without being the same as her predecessor.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Mirabel's change in tone doesn't go unnoticed by the family. She barely moves, she speaks in an even tone, she cracks zero jokes and wears clothes without any of her embroidery.
  • Warp Whistle: Ever since their return five chapters ago, the space-time anomaly used to travel between the Encanto and Berk is now much more streamlined, people from one village able to fly to the other as though they were separated by a few miles.
Hiccup and Mirabel were unsure as to why this happened, but they figured magic did what it wanted.
