Chapter 16: Donkey Problems

Tropes That Appear In This Chapter:

  • Absurdism: As monotonous as it was, collecting the escaped donkeys was a daily chore that Luisa took pride in. With her Super-Strength gone, her ability to do it is shot. When Hiccup makes a latch to keep them from escaping, while grateful, she now feels lost since she has free time she has no idea how to spend.
  • Added Alliterative Appeal: Ignacio calls the reconstruction plan the "Crazy Casita Construction Crew."
  • An Aesop: Hiccup points out that Luisa's need to be strong all the time (which he compares to the "Men Are Tough" philosophy Vikings adhere to) as a toxic mentally that can do more harm than good.
Hiccup: You aren't weak for feeling weak, it actually makes you stronger. Bottling your emotions up doesn't make you tough, never taking a break doesn't make you hardcore. It just hurts you, and the people you care about. Trust me, I've seen the proof. A whole island's worth of proof.
  • Freudian Slip: Hiccup, in his head, almost refers to Stoick as his father before correcting himself and referring to him as the chief, as Stoick isn't his dad anymore.
  • Mundane Solution: With no Super-Strength to do her usual duties, Luisa is left unable to do anything about the loose donkeys. Hiccup helps by having Toothless herd them into the barn. Then he adds a latch to the latchless barn, making it so that the donkeys won't escape again.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Apparently the reason why the donkeys kept escaping was because the barn-door didn't have a latch on it.
How did the barn doors not lock? What, did they think the animals would stay inside on their own? Just to be nice?
  • Workaholic: Hiccup compares Luisa's work-ethic to the Berk-saying "A true Viking never rests, he keeps going until he passes out."
