"I Am He" is the eighth episode of season 1 of The Chosen.

Jesus and His students complete their preparations and leave Capernaum for Samaria. Jesus meets with a suffering woman at Jacob's Well and announces that He is the Messiah.

This episode provides examples of:

  • All Issues Are Political Issues: Nicodemus observes that it's all about politics and promotion for Shmuel.
  • Cool Old Lady: Simon's mother-in-law, Dasha, who immediately after being healed from her near death illness, is bustling around Simon and Eden's kitchen making snacks for the guests.
  • Doesn't Trust Those Guys: The disciples are shocked that Jesus would travel through Samaria, rather than going to the Jordan. Big James exclaims, "But Rabbi, they're Samaritans." Jesus rebukes them.
  • Dramatic Irony: Simon announces that his fighting days are over. Later on when Jesus gets arrested in the garden of Gethsemane, he cuts off the ear of a servant.
  • Dropping the Bombshell: Jesus tells Photina, the Samaritan woman at the well, "everything [she] ever did", stopping her cold in her tracks and prompting her to face her inner turmoil and share what she now knows about Jesus to the entire town.
  • Flashback: The episode opens with Jacob's sons digging the well at which Jesus will meet Photina at the end of the episode.
  • Foot-Dragging Divorcee: Photina gives a bill of divorce to Neriah, her current husband, and begs him to divorce her. He refuses to sign it, and tosses it in the fire.
  • Gagging on Your Words: A variant: A pharisee says that he would be defiled by merely mentioning the unholy things that take place in the Red Quarter.
  • I Have This Friend: Gaius can't admit to Matthew's parents that he cares about him.
Gaius: I know some people that were mildly fond of your son.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Matthew explains to Gaius his decision to follow Jesus, pointing out that Gaius is Germanic, so his people surrendered to the Romans. Matthew says that he is also surrendering.
  • One Dialogue, Two Conversations: The conversation between Jesus and Photina becomes this, with her still talking about physical water and him talking about eternal life.
  • Red Light District: The pharisees are shocked that Jesus is eating with a woman from the Red Quarter.
  • Telepathy: Jesus is suspected of reading others' thoughts.
    • Simon comments that Jesus already knows what is bothering him. Averted when Jesus replies that everyone in the group knows what he's thinking most of the time, and that it does not take God's wisdom.
    • Shmuel tells Nicodemus that just before healing the paralytic (in the previous episode), Jesus turned to Shmuel and recited his thoughts "as if reading them from a scroll."
  • Uncle Pennybags: In a mildly tragic example, Nicodemus wimps out on actually following Jesus, but does leave them a bunch of money to help them on their journey.
  • You Owe Me: Gaius says that his promotion was due to Matthew's abilities. Then Matthew leverages that to ask Gaius for a favor.
