Recap / The Casagrandes S 1 E 1 Going Overboard Walk Dont Run

Go To

Going Overboard: Ronnie Anne discovers Carlos was a famous skateboarder and begs him to teach her some moves.

Walk Don't Run: Ronnie Anne and Sid start a dog walking business to buy a new skateboard which spirals out of control.

"Going Overboard" provides examples of:

  • Clothing-Concealed Injury: Carlos injures his leg when he tries to teach Ronnie Anne some of his old skateboard tricks. Because Carlos promised Frida he wouldn't skateboard again after they had children, Ronnie Anne helps him hide his cast with bear-skin boots from Carlota's closet.
  • Everyone Went to School Together: Carlos's flashback shows that he and su esposa, Frida, had gone to the same college and it's implied (but not confirmed) that this is ultimately how they met.
  • Foreshadowing: Prior to the reveal that Carlos secretly skateboards at night, he's shown to be looking rather nervous when su sobrina questions su familia on who (or what) scratched her skateboard.
  • Hidden Depths: Much to Ronnie Anne's surprise, her Tío Carlos (a bookish college professor) turns out to be a very skilled skateboarder. When su sobrina questions him on it, Carlos admits that he didn't really get into skateboarding until college and admits that part of the reason he got so into it was because skateboarding was the most efficient way to get around campus.
  • Injured Limb Episode: Carlos injures his leg when he tries to teach Ronnie Anne some of his skateboard tricks.
  • Never Mess with Granny: Abuela Rosa's been working out and, as a result, has acquired such Super-Strength as to lift an entire TV table with no (visible) effort.
  • Noodle Incident: After discovering that her skateboard has a big scratch mark on it and questioning su familia on it, Ronnie Anne initially suspects that su abuela's the one behind it, as Rosa had apparently once used Ronnie Anne's skateboard to move the refrigerator.
  • Secret-Keeper: After Ronnie Anne discovers su tío skateboarding at night, Carlos makes her promise not to tell Frida about it—Carlos explains that after his and Frida's kids were born, Frida (justifiably worried that su esposo could get hurt) made him promise not to skateboard anymore. However, Ronnie Anne convinces her tío to teach her some of his old skateboarding moves while promising not tell Tía Frida.

"Walk Don't Run" provides examples of:

  • Chekhov's Classroom: Everyone who gets Ronnie Anne and Sid to walk their dogs tells them the things that their dogs like. When the Alley Cats scare the dogs away, Ronnie Anne and Sid remember those things to get them back.
  • *Crack!* "Oh, My Back!": At the start of the episode, Mr. Nakamura has injured his back in an ice-skating incident.
  • Delusions of Doghood: Ironically, a dog named Little Sal thinks he's a cat.
  • Dogs Hate Squirrels: At least, Big Tony does.
  • Easy Come, Easy Go: The episode ends with Ronnie Anne and Sid losing every last dollar they earned walking dogs trying to get the dogs back due to using various tactics to get them back and getting fined by the dogcatcher.
  • Extreme Omnivore: Buttercup will eat anything in sight and probably throw it back up.
  • Filthy Fun: Pickles likes to roll in the mud. Good thing Bobby knows how to bathe dogs.
  • Karma Houdini: The Alley Cats receive no comeuppance for destroying Ronnie Anne's skateboard or scaring away the dogs that Ronnie Anne and Sid were walking.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Carl, on the other hand, gets his comeuppance for conning Ronnie Anne out of her $10 to find Lalo by getting chased by all the dogs.
  • Sleepyhead: Ninja (Miranda's St. Bernard) has a habit of sleeping whenever wherever.
