Recap / The Americans S 5 E 7 The Committee On Human Rights

Go To

Paige is impressed by Gabriel when she meets him, especially when Gabriel tells her how brave she's been and that her parents are heroes. Elsewhere, Paige is not doing so well, as she confesses to Pastor Tim she no longer prays like she used to, and she ends up breaking up with Matthew because she can't take having to deceive him anymore. Gabriel, meanwhile, takes the wheat Elizabeth said she'd get him, but won't say anything else about why he's leaving, only that it's time. He does tell Philip Paige's recruitment is the reason why he's leaving, and admits to Philip she should never had been recruited in the first place.

As far as their assignments go, Deirdre tells Philip because she'd break up with him if he moved to be with her (she thinks he's too needy), while Elizabeth discovers Strobert is seeing another woman, which surprises her. Elizabeth is able to break into Dr. Semel's office, and finds out the doctor is working through the American Psychiatrists Association for a well-funded group working in opposition to the Soviet government.

Stan and Aderholt meet with Sofia, who wants assurances for herself and for her son. Aderholt tells her it can all be done, but Stan tells her it's going to be tough, and this scares her off. Also, Stan learns from Wolfe the CIA has agreed not to pursue Oleg, but only if Stan is transferred out of the counter-intelligence unit, which won't happen until after he and Aderholt have continued their operation with Sofia.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Brutal Honesty: Stan isn't brutal, exactly, but in refusing to sugarcoat what would happen if Sofia worked for them, he scares her off.
  • Call-Back: Philip asks Gabriel if Renee is working for the KGB as a Deep Cover Agent, and Gabriel says as far as he knows, she isn't.
    • When Paige breaks up with Matthew, and he grabs her arm, Paige pushes him away, showing she's been learning from her training sessions with her mother.
    • Oleg looks up the record of when his mother was in a prison camp.
  • Do You Want to Copulate?: Deirdre asks Philip if he wants to have sex.
  • Mirror Character: In this episode, Gabriel and Pastor Tim have become this in regards to dealing with Paige. Both of them tell Paige how great it is to stand for something larger than yourself, or sacrifice something in life for the benefit of someone else. Of course, they both differ on what that something else is, as well as what kind of sacrifice should be made.
  • Pet the Dog: Gabriel admitting to Philip near the end that Paige should never have been recruited to be a spy in the first place.
  • Shout-Out: Pastor Tim tells Paige how much Alice has wanted to see Terms of Endearment.
  • Title Drop: The name Elizabeth sees on the folder in Dr. Semel's office is "The Committee on Human Rights".
