Recap / The Americans S 2 E 10 Yousaf

Go To

Elizabeth and Philip are ordered to try and turn Yousaf (Rahul Khanna), a Pakistani delegate meeting with the CIA. Although Elizabeth is the one who makes initial contact with him, Philip decides they should use Annelise to be the one involved in pursuing him. Annelise does have dinner with Yousaf a couple of times, and ends up sleeping with him, but she gets angry at Philip, accusing her of pimping her out. While that happens, Elizabeth kills Yousaf's superior will be promoted and be in America more often.

Philip is feeling guilty about getting angry at Paige (despite Elizabeth's assuring him he was in the right), so when Paige wants to go to a church summer fellowship camp, Philip seems open to the idea. However, when Elizabeth, who's opposed, finds out Paige was trying to forge her signature, she forbids Paige from going.

Larrick comes back from the Martial Eagle camp. He finds George and shoots him dead. Though George manages to short out the circuit box, Larrick is able to trace one line back to Kate.

Elsewhere, Stan continues to investigate Emmett and Leanne's murders, even interviewing Jared about it (as well as asking Nina), and Gaad gets reinstated when the Soviets agree to accept the idea Vlad was mugged.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Brief Accent Imitation: When Larrick reaches Kate's phone, he puts on a Southern accent, pretending he's calling for "Bobby".
  • Call-Back: When Arkady talks about Vlad, Gaad brings up Chris' murder.
  • Continuity Nod: Nina and Oleg continue to see each other outside the office, and talk about their childhoods.
  • Deadly Gas: Elizabeth kills Yousaf's superior with poison gas while they're both in the pool.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: While Larrick is on a Roaring Rampage of Revenge against those who killed the soldiers at Martial Eagle, when he breaks into a house with a family in it, he appears stricken at the idea of killing a small child (he ends up not having to do so when he finds out the telephone lines he's tracking lead to another house).
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: Annelise demands Philip give her a drink after she sleeps with Yousaf.
  • Parents as People: Discussed - When Stan interviews Jared, he tells him, "When you get older, you realize that your parents are also just people, like everyone else. And just like everyone else in the world, you can't really know everything about them" (also counts as Arc Words).
  • Product Placement: At breakfast, while Henry is having waffles, Philip says, "Leggo my Eggo", which was the jingle for Eggo Waffles.
  • Sherlock Scan: When Gaad is inspecting a suitcase Emmett and Leanne had, he figures out there's a false bottom, which leads him and Stan to conclude they might be illegals working for the Rezidentura.
  • Shout-Out: Philip says to Henry, "Leggo my Eggo", which was an ad slogan for Eggo Waffles.
  • This Is Something He's Got to Do Himself: When Larrick is leaving Martial Eagle, he tells a fellow officer he's going back to America for personal reasons. When the officer offers to help, Larrick turns him down, saying, "There are some things in life a man's gotta do himself".
