Recap / The Americans S1E5 - COMINT

Go To

Elizabeth reaches out to a Mole who is in a company working on behalf of the Defense Department, and who Vasili has been running. When the man, panicked, calls the Rezidentura, and the FBI are able to record it, they follow Vasili when he does set up a meeting. Also, thanks to Nina, they're tipped off to the fact the Soviets (thanks to Elizabeth and Philip) know their automobile codes.

Elizabeth also seduces the head of a computer company to get those codes, but it turns out the man likes to beat women with his belt during sex, which angers Philip, but she refuses to let Philip do anything about it.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Boom, Headshot!: How Elizabeth kills Vasili's contact, to keep him from inadvertently exposing Vasili.
  • Call-Back: When Stan tries to speak Russian to Nina, she corrects him, just as he corrected her English in the previous episode.
  • Foreshadowing: This is the episode where "Clark's" romance with Martha begins, which becomes important as the series goes on.
  • If I Wanted You Dead...: Discussed - When Philip wants to go after the man who beat Elizabeth during sex, Elizabeth points out, "If I wanted to deal with him, you don't think he'd be dealt with?"
  • Sadistic Choice: If Vasili goes to the meet, it exposes both him and his contact, but if he doesn't go to meet, the contact, who's emotionally fragile, may do something drastic like confess or kill himself. Vasili decides to Take a Third Option (see Boom, Headshot! above).
  • Sleeping with the Boss: What Nina ends up doing with Vasili to get information from him. When she tells Stan this, he's stunned and crushed, telling her he never wanted to do that.
  • Terminology Title: "COMINT" is shorthand for "Communications Intelligence", which both sides are engaged in here.
