When Richard is put in the hospital after trying to fix the satellite TV in the house, Granny Jojo (Richard's overbearing mother) moves in and safeguards the entire house, causing Gumball, Darwin, and Anais to become fat and stupid like Richard.

Tropes:

  • An Aesop: It's okay to make mistakes if you learn from them.
    • Another one, for parents: Being overprotective will only hurt your child in the long run.
  • Berserk Button: Nicole gets increasingly frustrated with Jojo's overprotectiveness and terrorizing the kids over the course of the episode, but she hits her breaking point when the latter all but outright calls her a bad mother.
Jojo: A good mother prevents accidents before they happen.
Nicole: I AM A GOOD MOTHER! (attacks her)
  • Bowdlerization: The Turkish dub mutes out Gumball yelling, "You stupid board!" after one of his failed skateboard tricks.
  • A Day in the Limelight: For Granny Jojo.
  • Everything Trying to Kill You: Granny Jojo invokes this trope to scare her grandchildren into submission. In her view, everything from using a knife to taking a shower to closing a window is a horrible disaster waiting to happen.
  • Facial Horror: Gumball gets so many contradictory orders from Granny Jojo and Nicole on which direction to look in that he tears the top half of his head apart and freaks out Felicity and Billy as they talk about the hospital being good.
  • Fake Arm Disarm: Granny Jojo cuts off a fake arm to show to Darwin that "nobody is safe when there's a knife around".
  • Fish Eyes: Richard and the kids frequently go fish-eyed after Granny Jojo's parenting makes them stupid.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: While the others are yelling to slow motion to hit the brakes, Darwin is still moving regularly for a second until he notices them and slows down as well.
  • Friction Burn: Gumball's idea for stopping the car is to open the door, have the family stick their legs out, and drag them against the ground. This only results in burnt feet without any noticeable slowdown.
  • Hypocritical Humor: For the sake of protecting her grandchildren, Granny Jojo horribly endangers and traumatizes them, nearly running Gumball over with her car, setting off a bomb inside Anais's room, pretending to cut her arm off in front of Darwin, and would have wildly waved a hacksaw around in Richard's face while pretending to have cut her leg off if he'd opened the tool shed.
  • Insane Troll Logic: Richard has a lengthy process of deduction for when the TV isn't working:
    • The remote won't turn the TV on and there are batteries on the living room table? Throw them at the TV.
    • Screen of the TV broken by thrown batteries? Hit it some more.
    • A cable is going from the TV into the wall? Cut a hole in the wall with a chainsaw.
    • Can't jump high enough to get to the satellite dish on the roof? Use a ladder... and hit the dish with it.
    • Junk drawer is full of TV repair coupons, duct tape, and silverware? Use the forks to climb up the house, onto the roof, and throw more batteries at the dish.
  • Instant Convertible: The family car gets its hood torn off when Richard drives it under a semi.
  • My Beloved Smother: Nicole realizes that this is the entire reason Richard is the way he is: Jojo's overprotective parenting made it so Richard never had to think for himself to the point that now he can hardly think at all.
  • Percussive Therapy: Granny Jojo says she's going to move in, infuriating Nicole, so Gumball asks the doctor what the cheapest object in the room is. He says it's an IV rack, so Gumball gives it to Nicole, who bends it out of shape in frustration. When informed even that was several hundred dollars, she bends it back perfectly straight.
  • Post-Stress Overeating: After endless surprise "lessons" from Granny Jojo, the kids and Richard are so overwhelmed (and so convinced that the whole world is deadly) that they can do nothing but sit on the couch and stuff their faces with junk food.
  • Safety Worst: The reason Richard is so thick-headed: Granny Jojo was so overprotective. She nearly does this to the grandkids, which causes them to lose their brains in the process.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Nicole hits hers when Jojo not only traumatizes her children into becoming miniature versions of Richard, but when the latter has the audacity to imply that she's a bad mother.
  • Scare 'Em Straight: Turns out Granny Jojo raised Richard, and tries to raise her grandkids, by traumatizing them into fearing dangerous things. Unfortunately, her view is that everything is dangerous, and scares Gumball, Darwin, and Anais to the point that they won't do anything, even think.
  • Shell-Shock Silence: Anais's ears ring when Granny Jojo sets off a bomb in her room to show that "nobody is safe around windows".
  • Stupidity-Inducing Attack: Granny Jojo's parenting counts as one. She browbeats Gumball, Darwin, and Anais into believing that everything in the entire world—including thinking—is dangerous, and that the only safe thing to do is let her take care of everything while they mindlessly eat. As a result, they become incredibly stupid and gain lots of weight.
  • Temporary Bulk Change: Granny Jojo's parenting makes Anais, Darwin, and Gumball gain weight and become No Neck Chumps like Richard because they're too terrified to do anything but sit in place and eat. Gumball goes to the point of having man boobs and a sagging gut even more visible than his father's.
  • Tempting Fate: Nicole asks what's the worse that can happen when Gumball is standing on a skateboard and wearing a helmet and pads. He immediately jumps up and lands on the pointed-up end of the board, crotch-first. Gumball then smacks it against the ground, with the rebound hitting him, Darwin, and Anais.
  • Unflinching Faith in the Brakes: Nicole stands in front of the car Richard and the kids are in to make it stop without moving an inch. When the car narrowly brakes in time, all five of them seem unfazed, then pass out from shock.
  • Vengeful Vending Machine: Gumball flashes back to trying to get something out of a vending machine by reaching inside, then cuts to him getting rescued by Hank. Next time, he just paid for it.
  • Wipe That Smile Off Your Face: Nicole tears off Granny Jojo's mouth and throws it in the glove box to shut her up.
