Recap / The Addams Family S 2 E 26 Lurchs Little Helper

Go To

After Morticia expresses concern that the family has been overworking Lurch, the Addams men build a robot, Smiley, to take some of the load off him. Initially, Lurch enjoys having someone to order around a little too much, but when the family starts expressing too much appreciation for Smiley, Lurch grows jealous.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Borrowed Catchphrase: The Addamses program Smiley to use Lurch's "You rang?"
  • Deadly Euphemism: After Lurch takes Smiley into the next room and returns without him, the Addamses ask where the robot is. Lurch holds up a wrench and says, "Resigned."
  • Green-Eyed Monster: The Addamses, trying to reassure Lurch that it's okay to relax a bit, go overboard in telling him that Smiley can fill in for him. Lurch goes from reveling in the ability to order someone else to do all his work to mourning that the family likes his replacement better.
  • Gone Horribly Right: Smiley often overdoes instructions. He shreds Gomez' shirt while scratching his back and tightens the trampoline so much that it vaults Gomez through the ceiling.
  • Repeat to Confirm: Gomez asks Uncle Fester for a couple of tools and a screwdriver (as in the drink). Fester hands them to him and repeats the remark.
  • Rotten Robotic Replacement: Lurch is promoted "head butler" of the house by giving him another butler to order around, "Smiley" (played by Robby the Robot). Smiley proves unable to manage all the small touches Lurch can and Lurch gets jealous, leading him to terminate the robot and go back to being the house's one and only butler.
  • Running Gag: Lurch repeatedly calls Smiley whenever the Addamses call him.
