Recap / Teen Titans S 3 E 10 Can I Keep Him?

Go To

Starfire: Here, Silkie, Silkie! Here, my sweet little mutant!
Killer Moth: Um ... here, Larva M-319. Come to ... papa.

After defeating Johnny Rancid, the Titans return to the Tower only to find it half destroyed. It turns out Beast Boy has taken one of Killer Moth's silkworms as a pet and has named him "Silkie." To stop Silkie from being discovered, Beast Boy gives Silkie to Starfire who immediately falls in love with the adorable critter. When she feeds him with alien food from her home planet Tamaran, however, he grows dramatically in size and it becomes impossible to hide him in the tower any longer. When the jig is up, Robin makes her part ways with Silkie—which allows Killer Moth to retrieve his long-lost larva and turn it into the savage insect he engineered it to be.

Tropes:

  • An Arm and a Leg: Silkie ends up eating Cyborg's leg upon emerging from a vent. He later gets it back after Silkie explodes.
  • Adoring the Pests: Both Beast Boy and Starfire fall in love with the mutant moth larva Silkie. Beast Boy adopted him after the events of "Date With Destiny" and Starfire refers to him as her bumgorf and herself as his k'norfka.
  • Affectionate Parody: This entire episode is one to the kaiju film Mothra, up to having a giant moth kaiju on a rampage. Rancid's second mech is even named Rex-zilla to enforce the reference.
  • And Your Little Dog, Too!: Played for Laughs when Raven refers to Johnny Rancid's enormous robot dog with the Stock Phrase.
  • Bad Liar: Starfire.
"Your earthly ways are strange. Please, what is this so-fa of which you speak?"
  • Bait-and-Switch: When the Titans confront Johnny again late in the episode, his comments about trading his giant robot dog Rex for a "monster" at first seem to indicate that he's tamed Silkie. It turns out that he just turned Rex into a robot Kaiju and renamed it Rexzilla. Rexzilla immediately becomes a Bait-and-Switch Boss when its promptly destroyed by the real Silkie, now forcefully tamed and metamorphed into a giant moth monster by Killer Moth.
  • Breather Episode: Especially considering how dark the previous episode is.
  • Call-Back: Beast Boy recaps to Starfire the events of "Date With Destiny" and reveals he kept a larvae.
  • Circling Birdies: Cyborg gets a nuts & bolts version after a particularly hard fall.
  • Cranial Eruption: Silkie gets one when Cyborg blasts the ceiling above him, to its chagrin.
  • Death Glare: Robin shoots one to Beast Boy for keeping one of Killer Moth's larvae against the team's wishes.
  • Disney Dog Fight: Killer Moth and Starfire make Silkie/M-319 choose between them.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: Sure, Beast Boy tries to dodge responsibility, but he's still correct that he's not the one who fed Silkie "radioactive space berries".
  • Eating Solves Everything: Silkie expelling the alien berries Starfire fed him causes pink sludge to cover the city. Of course, both Silkie and Starfire find the sludge delicious, so it's likely that they are the ones who end up cleaning it up with their appetite.
  • Foreshadowing: When the Titans return home to find the tower a mess, Beast Boy looks more surprised than his teammates, this is because he knows that Silkie is responsible for the mess.
  • Furry Reminder: Starfire licks Silkie like a cat. According to the comics, Tamaraneans are feline as they're descended from a cat-like race.
  • "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight: Starfire invokes this on Silkie. Killer Moth invokes Luke, I Am Your Father and Silkie's mind flickers with flashbacks of Starfire and Killer Moth's parenting. Silkie ultimately chooses Starfire.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: Killer Moth tries and fails to invoke this with Silkie in order to get him to choose between him and Starfire. And follows it up with a hilarious Shout-Out:
Join me, and together we can... go out and have a picnic or something?
  • Never My Fault: Beast Boy when Robin glares at him for keeping Silkie as a pet.
  • Russian Reversal: Played as a Visual Pun. Johnny Rancid starts to say that his robot dog is kicking Robin's ass. Beast Boy cuts him off by transforming into a jackass and kicking Johnny.
  • Screams Like a Little Girl: Cyborg upon discovering Giant Silkie.
  • Sequel Episode: To "Date With Destiny".
  • Shoo the Dog: Starfire abandons Silkie on a barren rock island because his appetite has made him too dangerous to keep.
  • Shout-Out: Beast Boy has what appears to be pictures of the Three Stooges in his room.
  • Sure, Let's Go with That: When Raven notes that one of Starfire's curtains is torn, she dryly asks if Starfire was having an argument with the curtains. Starfire immediately latches onto the suggestion:
Starfire: Uh... Yes! Today is... gorb-gorb! The Tamaranean festival of berating drapery! STUPID CURTAINS! (proceeds to blast the curtains and windows with her Eye Beams before smiling sheepishly at Raven)
    Raven: (grumpily) Aliens...
  • Swallowed Whole: Before Johnny and his new pet, Rexzilla, can even fight the Titans, they get eaten by Silkie. Johnny later re-emerges after Silkie explodes, along with Cyborg's leg. No sign of Rexzilla, though.
    Johnny: I got eaten.
  • Visual Pun: Johnny saying, "My dog is kicking your-" followed up by Beast Boy turning into donkey and kicking him into a wall is real subtle.
