Recap / Teen Titans S 2 E 6 Date With Destiny

Go To

Her name is Kitten, and you will take her to prom.
Killer Moth

The villainous Killer Moth demands that Robin take his daughter on a date to her prom, much to Starfire's disgust.

Tropes:

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Kitten to Robin. More so for her unpleasant personality than her looks.
  • Adaptational Badass: Downplayed. Unlike his appearance in The Batman, Killer Moth is actually a credible threat with a plan that could feasibly let him take over the city. However, he's held back by having to deal with his Bratty Teenage Daughter Kitten and still ends up as a Butt-Monkey.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Killer Moth threatens to destroy the City unless the following three demands are met:
"The city will declare me ruler, the Teen Titans will surrender, and Robin... will take this lovely young lady to her junior prom."
    • What's funnier is that it's both a Parodied Trope and a Justified Trope.
  • Badass Normal: Kitten, to a minor extent. She was able to grapple with Robin temporarily before Fang showed up. She later gives a fairly decent fight to Starfire as well, though the super-strong alien girl with laser eyes may have been holding back or had been affected by her emotions.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Starfire is one of the nicer members of the Titans, despite being the strongest. You can see her go from nice to scarily angry when she's watching Robin with Kitten. She knows Robin wants no part of it, but she also knows if anyone would interfere the city would be destroyed. When the opportunity presents itself, Starfire proceeds to mop the floor with her.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Kitten starts off as the typical Bratty Teenage Daughter, before showing herself to be downright psychotic.
  • Big "NO!": Kitten, when her plan is ruined.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Said two times in the episode.
    • The first is by Starfire after Robin reluctantly decides to go along with Killer Moth and Kitten's demands.
    • The second is by Kitten when Robin reveals he has no intention of kissing her.
  • Bratty Teenage Daughter: Kitten is a good Trope Codifier.
  • Bullying a Dragon: Kitten attacks Starfire when Starfire yells that Robin and Fang are NOT fighting over Kitten. A NORMAL human being with no weapons on hand attacked a Tamaranean with super strength, the power of flight, and starbolts. And she does it again when Starfire ruins her dress.
  • Burning with Anger: Starfire, who first burns like a match, and later boils the punch.
  • Cat Fight: Between Kitten and Starfire. Starfire is The Fettered through this and uses no lethal force on Kitten except to shoot the moth trigger from her hand.
  • Captive Date: The plot of this episode.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: To say that Starfire is not happy with Robin being forced to take Kitten to her prom would be a massive Understatement.
  • Cutting the Knot: How Robin handles Kitten's Scarpia Ultimatum; she reveals the moth trigger and prepares to kiss him, but he simply presses a finger to her lips and grabs the trigger from her.
  • Dating What Daddy Hates: Kitten's boyfriend, Fang, is implied to be this to Killer Moth—in a blink-and-miss-it moment near the end of the episode where, after being arrested, Fang and Killer Moth share a moment's glance before simultaneously groaning in the Police Van.
  • Daddy's Little Villain: Kitten is this to Killer Moth. Villainy is very much in her blood.
  • Demon Head: Starfire gains one in a fit of angry jealousy, and snarls at some prom-goers who just wanted some punch.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Starfire staining Kitten's dress is what drives her to set the moths loose.
  • Doomed New Clothes: Kitten's dress gets covered in chocolate cake after her Cat Fight with Starfire.
  • Evil Is Petty: Kitten, through her father, holds the city hostage so she can force Robin to date her just to make her boyfriend jealous.
  • Face of an Angel, Mind of a Demon: Again, Kitten.
  • Four-Legged Insect: Fang's spider head only has four legs.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Starfire, who actually has green eyes. Bright, glowing green eyes at several points.
  • Gone Horribly Right: Kitten's plan to make Fang jealous by holding Robin as a Captive Date. It works, in that Fang returns and reconciles with her, but it also allows the Titans to vanquish Fang, Killer Moth, and her.
  • Incoming Ham: Kitten: "DAAADDDYYY!"
  • Interspecies Romance: Kitten and Fang (who is some kind of spider person), to the point of parody. Particularly given Kitten's father is a mothman.
  • It's All About Me:
    • Kitten doesn't care about her dad's evil plans, she wants a date for the prom.
    • When Robin and Fang fight during prom, Kitten seriously thinks they're fighting over her.
  • It Makes Sense in Context: Robin has a good reason for not going with the Titans to track down Killer Moth: "I have a date."
  • It's the Best Whatever, Ever!: When Robin apologizes to a couple that was paralyzed by Fang's venom for ruining their prom, they claim that it was the best prom ever.
  • Jaw Drop: At one point, Starfire's jaw drops straight into the punch bowl.
  • Kiss Diss: When Kitten tries to force a kiss on Robin after giving him a Scarpia Ultimatum, he just presses a finger to her puckered lips.
Robin: Not even if you paid me.
  • Large Ham: Kitten.
  • Loophole Abuse: Robin ordered the team to investigate Kitten and track down Killer Moth; Starfire stays with him to investigate Kitten "personally" on the date and protect Robin if she's a monster in disguise. Robin acquiesces when he sees how horrendous Kitten is.
  • Mad Love: Kitten and Fang.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: If Kitten hadn't insisted on taking Robin to the prom as her Captive Date, the Titans wouldn't have had time to find "Daddy" and his moths and thus stall the destruction.
  • No Ontological Inertia: Killer Moth's moths revert to larvae at the end of the episode right when the trigger for their release is smashed.
  • Operation: Jealousy: Kitten asks for her dad to secure Robin as a Captive Date for the prom so that Fang will get jealous. Her plan ends up going horribly right.
  • Reunion Kiss: Kitten and Fang when they make up. Eugh!
  • Poisonous Person: Fang spits venom that causes paralysis in humans on contact.
  • Punch! Punch! Punch! Uh Oh...: Averted; Fang falls unconscious after going several rounds with Robin.
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: "YOU. RUINED. MY. DRESS!", complete with Sparta-esque notes.
  • Reaching Between the Lines: Starfire is somehow able to slap Kitten with a glove during a video call.
  • Record Needle Scratch: Heard when Killer Moth gives out his demands for Robin to... take his daughter out to the prom.
    [scratch]
Robin: Umm... what was that last part again?
  • Rogues' Gallery Transplant: Killer Moth is traditionally a Batman villain, though he does at least square off against his sidekick in this continuity.
  • Scarpia Ultimatum: Kitten offers one to Robin: Kiss her or the moths eat the city. Naturally, he refuses.
  • Series Continuity Error: Starfire briefly displays the ability to shoot Eye Beams while fighting Kitten, even though this episode comes before "Transformation". It could be likely that "Date With Destiny" was completed beforehand and premiered ahead of schedule.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: Both Robin and Starfire. Robin, shockingly, wears a tux for the first time in... a while and Starfire wears a leg-length dress with long gloves. The mask, however, stays on Robin's face. Unfortunately, when they start fighting Kitten and Fang, they both switch into their normal fighting clothes.
  • She Is Not My Girlfriend: Robin attempted to say this about Kitten to Cyborg before being cut off by Beast Boy revealing a secret passage to Killer Moth's place.
  • Ship Tease: This episode features the most of this, between Robin and Starfire.
  • Shout-Out : Killer Moth and Kitten's house is modeled after The Brady Bunch house, complete with horse statue.
  • Spider Limbs: Fang, who has a spider for a head!
  • "Take That!" Kiss: Kitten grabs Robin by his suit and attempts to force a kiss on him, threatening to unleash the moths and destroy the city if he doesn't kiss her. Subverted when Robin simply presses a finger against Kitten's puckered lips and wrestles the trigger away from her.
  • Title Drop: The episode title happens to be the theme name of Kitten's junior prom, which can be seen on a banner when Robin arrives there.
  • The Fettered: Starfire, of all people. Although she is extremely angry with Kitten for holding Robin on a Captive Date, she restrains from using lethal force on a Badass Normal, instead smashing her with cake and then using a small starbolt to shoot the moth trigger from Kitten's hand.
  • The Ugly Guy's Hot Daughter: Killer Moth, and his daughter Kitten.
  • Ugly Guy, Hot Wife: Fang (spider for a head) and Kitten.
  • The Unsmile: Robin does a pretty good one as he's taking Kitten to the prom. You can even hear either the bones in his face or the muscles in his cheeks crack while he forces his face into said position.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: For some reason, there's a couple casually heading towards the dance floor... even though Robin is currently fighting Fang (a human mutant with a Giant Spider in place for a head) right in the middle. Said couple gets hit by one of Fang's stray paralyzing bolts in the process.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: Starfire.
Fang (to Robin): Get your hands off my girl!
    Fang encounters a starbolt.
Starfire (to Fang): Keep your legs off my boy!
  • Watch the Paint Job: Starfire smashes Kitten's limo right after she escorts Robin to the prom boat.
  • Wham Line: Delivered by Kitten when she reveals the moth trigger in her corsage. Note that she refused to let Killer Moth commit his crimes until he helps her with her prom night situation.
Kitten: Daddy's not calling the shots tonight, Robbie-poo! I AM!
    Robin: Daddy?
