Recap / Teen Titans Go S 5 E 52 Teen Titans Roar

Go To

The Titans are outraged when their favorite cartoon is rebooted, so they come up with a plan to get this new show off the air.

Tropes:

  • All for Nothing: The Titans manage to get 500 signatures for their "Stop ThunderCats Roar" petition and send it to Warner Bros. All they get in return is a form letter and a picture of Bugs Bunny.
  • Audience Surrogate: This episode's title is a jab at ThunderCats Roar, generally lampooning the backlash that cartoon received upon its announcement.
  • Big, Stupid Doodoo-Head: To stop the Titans’ argument, original Lion-O appears from the sky and says the following:
You've shown me that ThunderCats Roar is a worthy successor, and anyone who says otherwise has a poop mouth with poop opinions.
  • Crossover: This isn’t the only TTG episode that crosses over with another Cartoon Network series. The first one was with the The Powerpuff Girls (2016).
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: The ThunderCats end up beating the snot out of the Titans without much effort.
  • Deus ex Machina: The ending. After spending the entirety of the episode complaining about the reboot not appealing to their specific tastes, the '80s version of Lion-O appears from the "cartoon afterlife" to tell them that the reboot is a worthy follow up to the original, instantly resolving the conflict of the episode.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • The first minute of the episode is a parody of the intro to the original show featuring the Titans costumed as the characters.
    • During the battle between the Titans and Cats, Cyborg states that for every step the Cats take towards comedy, they take two more towards action. This is a paraphrase of a line from the launch trailer for 'ThunderCats Roar.''
    • At the end, Lion-O from the '80s version appears from the "cartoon afterlife" to endorse the new Thundercats show. Then the original Snarf is shown bemoaning that no one cares about him, along with the 2011 version of Lion-O. What makes it ironic is that the 2011 series was managed by Michael Jelenic, who wrote this episode and is the co-executive producer of Teen Titans Go.
  • Only Sane Man: Starfire is the only Titan who even bothers to watch an episode of the ThunderCats reboot before deciding if it's good or bad, and is the only one who understands it'd take way more than a petition with 500 signatures to stop it. The other Titans don't even finish watching the opening before deciding to hate it.
  • Running Gag: Robin yelling about how they made the reboot "not exactly the way we wanted them to!" with the words appearing on screen.
  • Take That, Audience!: The plot is a satire of how upset and frustrated die-hard fans of franchises can become when a series is rebooted or gains a spin-off.
    • It is also ironic because the same scenario happened to the Titans; whereas the 2003 series was more strictly an action comedy, Go doubles down on the comedic aspects, which upset many fans of the original 2003 series.
  • Think of the Children!: Parodied; one of the defenses the Titans use against the reboot is that "kids deserve better and are smarter than this". Cut to a baby reading a giant book in the corner.
  • Won't Take "Yes" for an Answer:
Starfire: 500 does not seem like a lot.
Cyborg: Have you ever been in a room with 500 people?
    Starfire: Yes.
    Cyborg: Didn't think so!
