- Chekhov's Gun: Mario's pasta sauce launcher was brought up as an expense found by Luigi while he was doing the taxes, which was later used against the Grand Council of Tax Fraud.
- Don't Celebrate Just Yet: Mario thinks he's managed to find a way out of the prison, until Hal Monitor appears to tear him a new rear end for trying to break out.
- Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Mario's laziness gets him into the Yoshi's Grand Council of Tax Fraud... and that same laziness puts him on their kill list.
- Pet the Dog: For his role in helping take down the Grand Council of Tax Fraud, Hal Monitor decides to pardon Mario of his own tax fraud.

- Unishment: Mario manages to negate the Grand Council of Tax Fraud's initial punishments, by kicking a lawyer man in the groin, simply collecting the money sent flying at him and not even reacting much to the tax seizure documents being used against him, most likely because he doesn't know how to correctly do his taxes in the first place.
- You Can't Go Home Again: Yoshi tells Mario that this trope will be in effect after breaking out of jail, and
he's not wrong, considering that it's Hal Monitor who will be hunting them down.
