Recap / Strong Bad Email E 99 Different Town

Go To

Airdate: Monday, February 23, 2004

Sender: Steven WV

Strong Bad: (singing) Check your email and check your email. (another recording of his voice comes in) Check your email and check your email.

Steven from "Wolksvagen" asks if Strong Bad could pour hot soup in Homestar's eyes... er, what Strong Bad would do if he could make his town different. Strong Bad has a whole list of suggestions, and proceeds to elaborate... in song!

Strong Bad: Weeeeeeeeeehhhhhhhllllllll, the Poopsmith, he could talk!
Poopsmith: Hello!
Strong Bad: And Marzipan would rock
And the Stick would be this big ol' tree
That'd try to eat everyone, except The Cheat and me!
Strong Mad: AND ME!
Strong Bad: We'll see.

He would also have the King of Town buried alive in a crate full of peas ("I hate peas!" "I know!"), have Bubs give away flamethrowers that shoot hundred-dollar bills made of imitation chocolate, give his "stupid baby brother" Strong Sad demonic horns and a tail, give Coach Z a cool jacket, cause Homestar to give up on being a terrific athlete, paint Pom Pom like an ABA basketball, and finally replace Homsar with a "modestly-hot" female version.

Strong Bad: This little weirdo would be a modestly hot girl
To help me through the hard times
You know, the kind that are only sorta hot
So they don't mess around with other guys!
Modestly Hot Homsar: (in Homsar's normal voice) Daaaah, I'm forever your girl!
(unseen audience cheers)

After being snapped out of his musical reverie, Strong Bad briefly becomes convinced that his changes are coming true when he sees Strong Sad with horns and a tail. It turns out Strong Sad is just cosplaying as Calibos for a Clash of the Titans fan convention, and wanted to know if Strong Bad still wanted him to pick up a bust of Bubo the owl as a souvenir. SB also questions whether or not his imagination is broken after being unable to think of anything better to do to Homsar than make him a modestly-hot girl.

Strong Bad: Lemme try and think up the Best Thing Ever. Um... Beef... Stew. Yup, it's busted alright.

Tropes:

  • '80s Hair: During the "Marzipan would rock" segment, Marzipan wears her hair in a ridiculously tall feathered bouffant.
  • Abnormal Ammo: Strong Bad's song includes Bubs giving away "flamethrowers that shoot chocolate hundred-dollar bills".
    Bubs: Imitation chocolate!
  • Bad Liar: Strong Bad unconvincingly explains that he was standing on the stool in order to check on the recessed lighting in the e-mail room.
  • Brick Joke: The above mentioned example becomes this. When Strong Sad questions why he is standing on his stool, Strong Bad claims to have been checking out the recessed lights. In pop-up, exactly 47 emails later, Strong Bad and the cheat are jamming, when Strong Bad manages to jump so high off his stool that he almost hits the ceiling, which contains, you guessed it, recessed lighting.
  • Buried Alive: Strong Bad boasts he would trap the King of Town "underground, in a box filled up with peas!"
  • Butterface: Modestly Hot Homsar has a shapely body and long legs, but also has Homsar's face (and voice) with Tertiary Sexual Characteristics like long hair, lipstick, and eyelashes. She also has no arms.
Strong Bad: Modestly hot, my eye!
  • Does Not Like Spam: Apparently, peas are one of the few foods the King of Town doesn't like.
  • Freudian Slip: When Strong Bad replies to Steven's e-mail, he says aloud "Pour hot soup in Homestar Runner's eyes, eh Steven?"
  • Gender Bender: Modestly Hot Homsar.
  • I Need to Go Iron My Dog: After concluding that his imagination is broken, Strong Bad excuses himself with "I'm gonna go... place."
  • Insignia Rip-Off Ritual: Homestar does a variant when Strong Bad says he "just couldn't hack it" in the different town; Homestar rips the star off his own shirt with a shout of "I quit!", then stomps on it a few times.
  • List Song: Strong Bad's "Different Town" song is him listing all the ways he'd make Free Country, USA different.
  • Musical Nod: During the intro, Strong Bad chants the phrase "check your email and check your email" to the rhythm of "Ana Ng" by They Might Be Giants. Fitting, considering Strong Bad's "Different Town" song was a joint effort between the Brothers Chaps and TMBG.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Marzipan's skull-and-bones guitar is modeled after "Mom", the guitar used by George Lynch during his time with Dokken.
    • Modestly Hot Homsar makes a reference to "Forever Your Girl" by Paula Abdul.
    • Strong Sad dresses as Calibos from Clash of the Titans.
  • Special Guest: The song was written and performed by They Might Be Giants; and in the DVD Commentary, sings it too.
  • Suddenly Voiced: One of the changes in Strong Bad's song is that the Poopsmith could talk.
  • That Reminds Me of a Song: When answering Steven's email, Strong Bad unexpectedly bursts into song.
Strong Bad: Make the town different, eh Steven? Weeeeeell...
  • Vocal Dissonance: Modestly Hot Homsar speaks in normal Homsar's voice.
  • When Trees Attack: If Strong Bad could make the town different, "The Stick would be this big ol' tree / that'd try to eat everyone except The Cheat and me!" (and possibly Strong Mad)

Strong Bad: I'm gonna go... place. (gets up and leaves)
(The Paper comes down)
