Recap / Strong Bad Email E 98 Stupid Stuff

Go To

Airdate: Monday, February 16, 2004

Sender: Kevin Grumbles

Strong Bad: (singing) Dah doh, doo doh, email me some words, doo-doo, some different words!

Kevin (grumbles) think it would be hilarious if Strong Bad could get Homestar to say some stupid stuff, but that's far too easy a task for Strong Bad.

Strong Bad: Uh, you don't really have to make Homestar say stupid stuff, (grumbles), that's the guy's bread 'n' butter. Or at least his, uh, cracker 'n' mustard. No, the real challenge is to get Homestar to say something intelligent. If I can do that, then you owe me a batch of your special Grumblecakes. And if I fail, then I'll quit stealing the bricks from your house, one by one.

Strong Bad gets up just in time to see Homestar staring over his shoulder, waiting to show off his ability to stand on one foot. Strong Bad offers to split one of his Grumblecakes if Homestar can say something intelligent, and even provides a scientist costume and test tube to add to the illusion.

Homestar: Woah, check me out, Strong Bad, I look a-smart!
Strong Bad: You sure do, stupid.
Homestar: (stands on one leg) And I'm standing on one foot!

About the smartest things Homestar can think to say are "Science!", "Science again!", and "plus two... hundred", so Strong Bad decides to employ some "reverse psychologies" by asking a stupid question in order to get an intelligent answer. It doesn't work out like planned, however...

Strong Bad: I say there, Homestar, butt's twelve by pies?
Homestar: Ooh, yes! I got Strong Bad to say something stupid! The Grumblecakes will be mine!
Strong Bad: What?! What the crap just happened?! Is it possible that I was just outsmarted by Homestar Runner?! I'LL GET YOU KEVIN (grumbles)!!!

The Cheat tries to comfort his boss with some The Cheatcakes, but Strong Bad isn't having any of it.

Strong Bad: Get that mess outta here! I don't want none o' those Cheatcakes! (knocks the tray away)
The Cheat: (angry The Cheat noises, leaves dejectedly)
Strong Bad: (apologetically) No, wait, The Cheat, come back!
(The Cheat comes back in.)
Strong Bad: Would you fix me some, um, mustard crackers?
The Cheat: (angry The Cheat noises)
(The Cheat leaves again. The Paper comes down.)

Tropes:

  • Ambiguous Syntax:
Strong Bad: Look, I'll give you half a Grumblecake if you can say something intelligent.
    Homestar: What's that?
Strong Bad: It's like a little cake with some, like, steam and sugar.
Homestar: No, no, the other one.
    Strong Bad: Oh, "intelligent"?
  • Feigning Intelligence: Strong Bad tries to get resident idiot Homestar to say something smart.
  • Hammerspace: Strong Bad pulls out a lab coat with glasses out of nowhere.
  • Hero of Another Story: Parodied. Homestar also made a bet with Kevin Grumbles.
  • Hitler Ate Sugar: The Cheatcake commercial knocks its competition by saying "only liars and thieves eat Grumblecakes, and those people go to prison."
  • Labcoat of Science and Medicine: Strong Bad gives Homestar a lab coat to wear to help him say something smart.
  • Malaproper: Homestar mixes up "intelligent" and "Intellivision".
  • Our Slogan Is Terrible: An Easter Egg at the end plays a little advertisement jingle for The Cheatcakes that bashes Grumblecakes.
  • Out-Gambitted: In his attempt to get Homestar to say something smart, Strong Bad says something stupid, which lets Homestar win the Grumblecakes Strong Bad was after.
  • Playing Both Sides: Kevin Grumbles apparently made separate bets with Strong Bad and Homestar, trying to get one to say something stupid and the other to say something intelligent. Strong Bad is devastated once he realizes what's going on.
  • Pun: Strong Bad literally grumbles the sender's last name.
  • Reverse Psychology: Strong Bad thinks that if he says something stupid enough, it'll somehow elicit an intelligent response from Homestar. It hilariously backfires.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: Invoked. Strong Bad gives Homestar a pair of glasses with a lab coat, hoping that it will make him say something smart.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: An Easter egg shows that "Butt's Twelve By Pies" is also the name of a "super-short play" written by Homsar.
  • Word-Salad Humor: Strong Bad's stupid question to Homestar is a garbled mess of a sentence.
Strong Bad: I say there, Homestar, butt's twelve by pies?

Singers: Only liars and thieves eat Grumblecakes, and those people go to prison! Just ask The Cheat!
The Cheat: (subtitled The Cheat noises) Those people go to prison!
