Steven watches a new episode of Crying Breakfast Friends.

Tropes:

  • Anthropomorphic Food: Most of the characters from Crying Breakfast Friends. The enemies, the Angry Lunch Enemies, are a hamburger, toast, and a pizza slice.
  • Audience Surrogate: Steven serves as this, though he has more context than the audience does about Breakfast Friends.
  • Bland-Name Product: The Dolphin games on Steven's back wall correspond to real-life GameCube games, including Steel Cog, Pikemen 2, Star Battlers: Team Leader, Lue's Estate, Smash Pals Scuffle, and Forever Darkness.
  • Evil Counterpart: The Angry Lunch Enemies seem to be this to the Crying Breakfast Friends.
  • Fusion Dance: Breakfast and lunch become brunch.
  • I Knew It!: In-universe, Steven had a theory about the lunch enemies that gets confirmed in this episode.
  • Inelegant Blubbering: Pear when no one comes to their breakfast party. Turns out they just arrived late.
  • It Makes Sense in Context: Steven's watching an episode where the Angry Lunch Enemies want to clear out the Breakfast Friends, since two meals can't exist at the same time. Apparently, an episode that has a Brunch Fusion Dance counts as a Wham Episode.
  • Lame Pun Reaction: Steven stayed off the internet so he wouldn't "get... spoiled, because they're food!" He then apologizes for using the same joke from the previous week.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Continuing the thread of Crying Breakfast Friends being the Steven Universe Fictional Counterpart for itself, Steven's concerns parody those of the show's own fans, including making theories, worrying about spoilers, getting excited about new Fusions, and not knowing when new episodes will come out; and the episode itself showcases a Steven Universe staple, resolving conflicts by befriending the enemy instead of fighting them. Steven also winks at the audience when talking about Breakfast Friends' hiatus.
  • Mundane Made Awesome: A Fusion Dance to make brunch.
  • Reaction Video: Steven reacts to the newest episode of Crying Breakfast Friends.
  • Schedule Slip:invoked Apparently, Crying Breakfast Friends suffers from this, since Steven doesn't know when the next episode will air.
Steven: I can't wait until the next episode, whenever that is, am I right?
  • Self-Deprecation: The short makes fun of several aspects of Steven Universe itself, especially its infamous Schedule Slipinvoked.
  • Self-Parody: "Samantha Pepper" is apparently the creator of Crying Breakfast Friends, and the storyboarders of the episode were "Geoff Lao" and "Howard Collins".
  • Show Within a Show: Crying Breakfast Friends, which Steven reacts to.
  • Squee: This is Steven's reaction to the Brunch Fusion Dance.
  • Take That, Audience!: Albeit done in an affectionate way; Steven is every blind commentator on YouTube or Vimeo; he sings along to the theme song, cries with the sad moments, shows relief on seeing "conflict resolved!", and is happy that his "lunch" theory is confirmed.
  • Tears of Joy: Steven sheds these when Pear's friends reveal that they did come to Pear's party, they just arrived late and proceeded to beg Pear's forgiveness for it.
  • Wham Episode: In-Universe, Steven says that this episode of Breakfast Friends is supposed to be "big". The big thing is that the Lunch Enemies appear, and they and the Breakfast Friends come together to become brunch.
