Recap / Star Wars Resistance S2E11 "Station to Station"

Go To

This episode aired December 15, 2019.

Onboard a Star Destroyer, Tam and Rucklin are prepping TIE fighters for an engine inspection, as Rucklin complains that boring tasks like this aren't what he expected when he signed on to the First Order. Lieutenant Galek arrives with a mission for the two of them: a supply run to a refuelling station Commander Pyre has an important meeting on. The two of them were chosen because they're familiar with these kinds of stations: as it turns out, the Titan is a supertanker fuel depot just like the Colossus.

Onboard, as Tam and Rucklin head for acquisitions, they're passed by a technician, his face hidden by a crate he's carrying, who nearly trips over an astromech droid and apologizes before leaving. Tam is surprised, because for a moment, the technician sounded like Kaz, and although Rucklin doesn't notice anything, Tam thinks that Kaz couldn't possibly be here... could he?

It turns out that Kaz, Neeku and CB-23 have infiltrated the Titan to steal a replacement trans-binary deflector for the Colossus, with the lives of the station's residents at stake. But the presence of Tam, Rucklin and Commander Pyre, all of whom will recognize the Resistance infiltrators on sight, is an unexpected complication...

Tropes:

  • As You Know: For the audience's sake, Neeku re-explains to Kaz that they need to get the trans-binary deflector before the Colossus' own deflector fails, which will expose everyone to deadly cosmic radiation. Neeku reiterates this again later just as Tam secretly overhears them, giving her a reason to secretly help them escape. It's worth noting that over-explaining things like this is perfectly in character for Neeku.
  • Book Ends: The episode starts and ends with Tam and Rucklin flying their TIE into and out of the Titan, respectively.
  • Brief Accent Imitation: Kaz puts on a gruff, lower-pitched voice while interacting with First Order personnel. It's not too convincing, but most of those he interacts with don't know who he is.
  • Call-Back:
    • Hux's presence would suggest that we are past the events of The Last Jedi, considering he'd be too occupied with the events of the movie if the episode took place at the same time.
    • Kaz and Neeku use the First Order troop transport that Hype and Aunt Z stole in "The Disappeared" to infiltrate the Titan.
  • Canon Immigrant: The First Order technician uniforms originated from the Saturday Night Live "Undercover Boss" skit about Kylo Ren, which in themselves are based on the Coruscant engineer uniforms from The Clone Wars episode "Heroes on Both Sides".
  • Chekhov's Gun: As Tam and Rucklin are flying their TIE into the Titan, a troop transport is one of the several other ships seen arriving. That's the ship Kaz and Neeku are on.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • CB-23 is disguised by being roughly covered in black paint, similar to Chopper's disguise in "Breaking Ranks".
    • When Hux says that he'll have the refueling stations destroyed if their standards aren't up to par, an angered Kaz almost chews him out, which is understandable considering that he witnessed Hux ordering the destruction of Hosnian Prime.
  • Contrived Coincidence: Kaz and Neeku sneak aboard the Titan to steal a vital part on the same day that Tam, Rucklin, Pyre, and even General Hux are visiting.
  • Evil Counterpart: The Titan is one of many refueling stations of the same model as the Colossus that has fallen under First Order control. It even has a darker-grey paint job with First Order livery on the hull. Tam notes that it feels more cold and sterile in comparison to her former home, but Rucklin calls it an improvement over that "ruffian trash heap".
  • Evil Is Hammy: Hux. First, he mutters about how he'll have all below-standard refueling stations "destroyed!", and later, we see him about to go on another feverish rant before the security alarm goes off.
  • Evil Is Petty: Rucklin reports the infiltration to security purely to spite Kaz.
  • Exact Time to Failure: While the countdown isn't shown, Kaz and Neeku are nonetheless aware of precisely how much time they have to replace the trans-binary deflector before it fails, which would expose everyone on the Colossus to deadly amounts of cosmic radiation.
  • Implausible Deniability: When Rucklin confronts Kaz and Neeku in the hyperdrive chamber, Kaz briefly attempts to claim that he's never heard of anyone by his name.
  • In Medias Res: Kaz, Neeku and CB-23 have already infiltrated the Titan by the time they're seen, and details like where they got their technician disguises and how the Colossus resistance found out where to get a new trans-binary deflector are thus left unanswered.
  • Kick the Dog: As Kaz tries to talk down Rucklin from exposing their infiltration by saying that they're doing this to save everyone on the Colossus, Rucklin does so anyways, saying that what happens will be Kaz's fault for being a Resistance spy and refusing to join the First Order.
  • Limited Animation: Hux is missing his coat, presumably because animating it would eat up the animation budget.
  • Oh, Crap!: Kaz, first when he's spotted by two stormtroopers and ordered to escort General Hux to a briefing, and then when the turbolift opens to reveal Commander Pyre, because while Hux has no idea who Kaz is, Pyre most certainly does and has a high chance of recognizing him. Fortunately for the mission, Pyre is too busy greeting Hux to pay any attention to the "technician".
  • Race Against the Clock: Kaz, Neeku and CB have two hours before the Colossus' trans-binary deflector fails to steal another one from the Titan, otherwise cosmic rays will be able to pierce the station's hull, killing its residents.
  • Reassigned to Antarctica: General Hux has been ordered to inspect the First Order's fuel depots by the new Supreme Leader, Kylo Ren. Clearly, a demotion from leading their forces on the front lines like he did in The Last Jedi.
  • Say My Name: Pyre's reaction when he sees Kaz as he and Neeku are escaping is to shout his name in surprise.
  • Sdrawkcab Alias: When stormtroopers catch Neeku and CB doing an unreported repair, Kaz shows up in the nick of time and calls Neeku "Ukeen".
  • Smug Snake: Rucklin is all too happy to turn in Kaz and Neeku, even after they beg him not to, so they can save everyone on the Colossus. He even brags to Tam that doing so will earn him a promotion.
  • Tempting Fate:
    • Kaz, when he and Neeku are atop a crate being carried by a crane so they can get to their ship, says this is going to work perfectly. Then CB is confronted by two First Order ball droids, resulting in Kaz having to improvise like mad so he and Neeku can get to their transport.
    • Rucklin smugly boasts to Tam that his reporting of Kaz and Neeku will get him a promotion to commander. As Kaz and Neeku's ship jumps into hyperspace...
Tam: There goes your promotion, Commander.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Kaz is shown to be incredibly skilled with a blaster as he manage to stun 2 stormtroopers and manage to shoot at a First Order fleet engineer manning a nearby crane, causing the two cranes to collide. One of the crates crashes into several gray boxes, which fell onto the stormtroopers shooting at him and Neeku.
  • Uncomfortable Elevator Moment: After Hux and his escorts make Kaz show them their way around the base, they immediately go into a turbolift. Hux breaks the awkward silence by muttering about how the layouts of these refueling stations are inconvenient but will likely be crucial to their conquest, but he'll destroy any that fail. Kaz is about to blow his cover to give Hux a piece of his mind when they're joined by Pyre. This is also taken up to eleven as Kaz is stuck in the turbolift with the genocidal maniac who ordered the destruction of Kaz's homeworld and the rest of the planets in its system; awkward doesn't even begin to cover it.
  • Villain Episode: Although Kaz and Neeku's perspective on events is seen at times, the episode is told largely from Tam's perspective.
  • Villain Opening Scene: The episode starts with Tam and Rucklin prepping for an engine inspection onboard the Star Destroyer, and none of the heroes are shown until Kaz has a run-in with the cadets while disguised as a technician.
  • Villains Out Shopping: The reason Tam and Rucklin are on the Titan — their CO ordered them to go on a supply run.
  • What You Are in the Dark:
    • Unbeknownst to everyone (perhaps except Tierny), Tam sees live security cam footage of Kaz and Neeku struggling to open a sealed door and overhears them saying that they need to steal a device to save everyone on the Colossus. Realizing what's at stake, Tam secretly opens the door for them and leads the security forces in the opposite direction.
"I can't believe I'm going to do this."
    • On the other hand, when Rucklin confronts Kaz and Neeku alone in engineering, he reports them to security and locks them inside, despite their begging him not to for the sake of everyone back on the Colossus.
