Recap / Star vs. the Forces of Evil S3 E22 "Night Life"

Go To

Star learns that Marco and Hekapoo have been dealing with rogue interdimensional portals.

Tropes:

  • Affectionate Nickname: Hekapoo keeps referring to adult Marco as "Muscles". Marco, in turn, calls her "H-Poo".
  • Aroused by Their Voice: Marco uses his adult voice to convince Hekapoo not to tell the Magic High Comission about Star's sleep-portalling. It works, as she admits she cannot resist the voice.
  • Bad Guy Bar: Marco and Hekapoo celebrate another successful mission at a bar called Dragon Spit.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Marco shows up in time with Nachos to help Hekapoo push the bunny pirates back in their dimension.
  • Big "NO!": Hekapoo's answer to the following question from Marco:
Marco: Haven't I earned your trust by now?
    Hekapoo: NO!!!
  • Bittersweet Ending: Marco manages to convince Hekapoo to keep Star's sleep portalling a secret from the Magic High Commission, but she's so frustrated at the duplicity of the whole thing she forbids him from helping her any further.
  • Blood Knight: Marco is seriously addicted to adventures and fighting. He can't get to sleep, so he silently leaves Star to aid Hekapoo. Also, he messes up her chance to close the last portal for good so he won't have to quit chasing portals.
  • Burning with Anger: Hekapoo does her Big "NO!" while wreathed in flames.
  • Continuity Nod: One of the dimensions Hekapoo visits is the dimension of cats with human faces mentioned in "Freeze Day", which has crossed with the home dimension of the bunny pirates from "The Bounce Lounge".
  • Comically Missing the Point: As Hekapoo asks why Marco punched the squid monster in the eye, he replies that there is nowhere else he could punch. She actually wanted him to leave it alone.
  • Cool Shades: Talon Raventalon wears these. When Marco accidentally breaks them, he gets angry and fights him.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: The episode is essentially a big allusion to a marriage falling apart, with the thrill-seeking Marco being unable to contain his boredom with his home duties and ditching his "wife" Star and "child" Glossaryck at night to have fun adventures with Hekapoo.
  • Go for the Eye: As Marco and Hekapoo come across a giant squid monster, Marco punches it in the eye.
Marco: Where else was I supposed to punch it?!
  • Innocently Insensitive: As Marco says he missed the "weird things", a random fellow at the bar takes offense to it. He is "quirky", not weird. Hekapoo repeats the description after Marco's left and the guy tries to make a move on her.
  • Lame Pun Reaction: After a string of cat puns from the Cats with Human Faces, Hekapoo remarks "Well, I hate it here."
  • Leitmotif: Any time Talon Raventalon does something manly and radical, a guitar solo plays.
  • Like a God to Me: When Marco and Hekapoo bring back the bunny pirates to their dimension.
Bunny crewmate: Captain, what were those strange creatures?
Bunny captain: Angels, me boy. They be but angels.
  • Living a Double Life: Marco in this episode splits his time between helping Hekapoo with portals and working as Star's squire. While Hekapoo knows about this, Marco is keeping Star in the dark.
  • Nerves of Steel: Star just stares at the harpoon fired at her, which Hekapoo barely keeps from reaching her, though in her state she may simply be ignorant of the danger.
  • Noodle Incident: When Marco meets Star near the beginning of the episode, she's got twigs in her hair and a black eye. Apparently she took Glossaryck for a walk, and "It did not go well."
  • Oh, Crap!: Marco when Hekapoo manages to catch up to Star while she's sleep-portalling, and realizes who she's been chasing.
  • Overly-Nervous Flop Sweat: Marco sweats profusely while trying to convince Star he was out fishing.
  • Proud Beauty: Marco really loves his adult body and tells Hekapoo he wishes he can stay that way.
  • Puppy-Dog Eyes: Though it's the voice that does her in, Marco puts on some glowing eyes while trying to get Hekapoo not to tell the High Comission about Star.
  • Reality Bleed: Rogue portals, caused by a sleep-portalling Star, are causing different planes to flow into each other, displacing creatures and threatening ecosystems. It's part of Hekapoo's job to close them and stop them at their source.
  • Secret-Keeper: Hekapoo reluctantly agrees to keep Star's sleep-portalling from the Council when Marco insists she needs to figure it out on her own.
  • Ship Sinking: Anyone who was a Markapoo shipper lost it when Hekapoo ended her partnership with Marco.
  • Testosterone Poisoning: Hekapoo decides she needs some extra muscle on her next job, so she hires a super-macho bird-man named Talon Raventalon whose every action is accompanied by electric guitar snippets.
Talon: Dragon cyclers don't ask questions! Dragon cyclers ride!
  • Third-Person Person: When Marco believes that using the harpoon is overkill, Talon replies: "Talon likes overkill."
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • Star chews out Marco for ditching his duties as a squire for adventuring with Hekapoo.
    • Hekapoo is really mad when she learns Marco knew Star was the one opening the rogue portals.
  • Wide Eyes and Shrunken Irises: Hekapoo's reaction to finding out who is the target she's been chasing all along.
  • Wham Shot: A golden creature emerges from the portal... revealed to be Star, in her butterfly form.
