Recap / Squirrel Boy S 1 E 7 Islands In The Street Speechless

Go To

Air date: August 18, 2006

"Islands in the Street": An accident leaves Rodney on a deserted island in the middle of the highway alongside Salty Mike.

"Speechless": Mr. Johnson is going to present his speech with Scoutmaster Witherbones, a scoutmaster who inspired him when he was a Badger Scout. When he sees a comedy film that is funny with Andy and Rodney, he laughs so hard that he loses his voice.

"Islands in the Street" contains examples of:

  • All Take and No Give: Kyle steals Salty Mike's ice cream and shows no remorse over it during their reunion.
Kyle: I'm glad you're back, Salty. More ice cream for me!
  • An Aesop: Don't bring your pets on wild adventures where they are likely to get lost and endangered.
  • Gross-Up Close-Up: Kyle's toenail infection is given one while he's wearing sandals.
  • Here We Go Again!: Salty Mike still cares about the island in the middle of the highway even after being back home, so he takes Rodney's advice to ask Kyle to drive him in a high-speed motorcycle and get involved in the same incident that Rodney did.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Mr. J deems Kyle a Nice Guy despite him blatantly destroying his car's cup holder and bullying his son in front of him. And surprisingly, he doesn't say this is his usual Deadpan Snarker tone.
  • Island Help Message: Rodney puts up a sign demanding help to get the attention of the cars passing by, though Salty sabotages it since the island turns out to be his paradise.
  • It's All About Me: Rodney keeps his food all to himself while in the middle of the island, despite how Salty Mike would have died of starvation had Rodney not offered him any of his food.
  • Robinsonade: Parodied. Rodney and Salty Mike are stranded on a traffic island.
  • Running Gag: Kyle bringing up his infected toenails.
  • Shout-Out: The title is a reference to the Bee Gees' 1983 song "Islands in the Stream".

"Speechless" contains examples of:

  • Asshole Victim: Mr. J throws Rodney twice and tries to physically attack him after he made him lose his voice. Granted, this could be considered animal abuse, but Rodney kind of deserved it due to him harassing Mr. J during his writing of speech and making him lose his voice from laughing too hard at a comedy film.
  • Hidden Depths: Rodney is shown to be a good violin player while accompanying a flashback, though he stops playing and denies this when Andy informs him of his talent.
  • Lost Voice Plot: Mr. J loses his voice after laughing too hard from watching a hilarious comedy movie known as Milton the Cow Finally Goes to the Dairy Olympics.
  • Pride: Rodney views his advice with a high opinion.
Rodney: So J Man, I heard you were gonna write a speech without tapping into my vast amount of experience, which is so weird. Are you okay? ''(places his hand on Mr. Js head)
  • Running Gag: Andy imagining normal things in the form of Milton the Cow, trying to control his laughter.
  • Self-Serving Memory: Andy is seen in the flashback of Mr. J's childhood as a Boy Scout, though is told to leave since he wasn't even alive at that time.
