Recap / Squirrel Boy S 1 E 6 Up All Night Pool For Love

Go To

Air date: August 11, 2006

"Up All Night": Andy and Rodney want to stay up all night to watch a celestial event called the Yellow Flash.

"Pool for Love": Andy tries to prevent his dad from chopping down Leon's tree in order to build a swimming pool. Rodney helps alongside Andy, until a female squirrel named Darlene persuades Rodney to go swimming with him.

"Up All Night" contains examples of:

  • Comical Nap Drool: Andy mentions that the first thing he does in the morning is mop up puddles of Rodney's sleep drool.
  • Continuity Nod: Grown-Up Rodney is shown wearing his pirate hat from "A Line in the Sandwich".
  • Epileptic Flashing Lights: The rate at which the Yellow Flash shines is overly bright and rather eye-straining. Kyle even says to Salty Mike that it will blind them as they try to run away (though it turns out the flash is actually just the headlight of Mrs. Flatbottom's motorized cart).
  • Flash Forward: The episode ends with a flashback 39 years into the future where Andy and Rodney are now grown-up, and the town has Jetsons-esque exterior and flying cars.
  • Flying Car: Grown-Up Kyle takes off on his flying car after stealing Andy's lawn ornaments.
  • Future Loser: Something which Future Kyle will bitterly admits to being in 39 years. Crosses over with Karma Houdini Warranty, since it's likely that not being properly disciplined played a role in this.
  • Happy Flashback: Mr. J nostalgically flashes back to his childhood when he himself saw the Yellow Flash.
  • Hallucinations: Andy and Rodney, due to their Sleep Deprivation, begin to hallucinate many things around them. First, they imagine the salt and pepper shakers on the table as having the faces of Mr. and Mrs. J (Mr. J being the salt and Mrs. J being the pepper), then they hallucinate the whole neighborhood as a Carribean, with Kyle and Salty Mike being the pirates. It's at that moment Andy and Rodney stop hallucinating and catch the lawn ornament thieves.
  • Older and Wiser: The case for Grown-Up Andy and even Grown-Up Rodney. Completely defied for Grown-Up Kyle and Grown-Up Salty Mike, which their rivals lampshade.
  • Running Gag: Kyle and Salty Mike are subject to a running gag of being the ones who stole the decorations off the Johnsons' front lawn.
    • First, a news report of unidentified suspects known as the "lawn ornament thieves" is revealed in Mr. J's paper, with his house being cited as the residence which the thieves targeted.
    • Then, Andy and Rodney hallucinate the neighborhood as a Carribean and view Kyle and Salty Mike as pirates. At that moment their hallucinations end and they come to realize that the duo of bullies are the lawn ornament thieves, pushing a shopping cart of stolen lawn decor.
    • Finally, in the Flash Forward ending sequence, Grown-Up Kyle is shown stealing a pink flamingo ornament off Grown-Up Andy's lawn, claiming that he has never learned his lesson even after all these years when Andy catches him.
  • Sleep Deprivation: Andy and Rodney try to go to sleep in the morning and wake up at night so they can see the Yellow Flash. Unfortunately, Andy doesn't get any sleep, causing him to be very drowsy at night when he's supposed to see the celestial event.

"Pool for Love" contains examples of:

  • Imagine Spot:
    • Rodney fantasizes about becoming an Official Couple with Darlene and having many baby squirrels with her.
    • At the end, he fantasizes about them walking into the sunset, with Darlene even lampshading it being an imagination sequence. Then the baby squirrels come chasing them.
Darlene: Rodney, is this a fake fantasy thing?
    Rodney: Sure is.
(baby squirrels chase them as they walk off into sunset)
    Rodney: What do we want?!
    Andy and Leon: No pool!
Rodney: When do we want it?!
    Andy and Leon: Now!
  • Waving Signs Around: Andy, Rodney, and Leon wave protest signs around while walking in circles around the latter's tree to prevent Mr. J from cutting it down to build the new pool. Accompanied by Slogan-Yelling Megaphone Guy.
  • Wingding Eyes: Rodney's eyes turn into heart symbols whenever he sees Darlene, whom he has a crush on.
