Go To

Air date: May 27, 2006

The first episodes of the Cartoon Network animated series Squirrel Boy, which aired as a series sneak peek on May 27, 2006, before the series officially premiered on July 14, 2006.

"A Line in the Sandwich": Andy and Rodney make sandwiches to raise money and buy a special ball known as a "Fobject" (a portmanteau of fun and object), but argue over whether Rodney's hat is increasing profits, or Andy's secret sauce.

"Tree for Two": After Andy's toy rocket ends up on top of the tallest tree in the park, Rodney must climb up the tree and retrieve it.

The trope sells the sandwich!:

  • Acquired Situational Narcissism: Andy and Rodney's sandwich-selling business goes to Rodney's head, with him boasting about his goofy pirate hat and claiming that it "sells the sandwich". This ends up driving him and Andy apart, but they, of course, make up in the end.
  • Body Pocket: Rodney has one which he pulls his wallet out of.
  • Companion Cube: When Rodney prepares to throw away his hat, he treats it like he's saying goodbye to a real person.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Rodney's claims of his hat selling the sandwiches causes Andy to snap and go full-on Sarcasm Mode, talking to the hat as though it is a real person.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: Andy isn't shown with a mother yet, despite her appearing in the show's intro. She doesn't debut until three episodes later in "Andy Had a Little Squirrel".
  • Establishing Character Moment: Rodney's status as a Lazy Bum who bothers Mr. J and steals his belongings is shown in the first 10 seconds of the opening scene.
  • Extreme Omnivore: A customer steals Rodney and takes a bite into his hat.
  • Here We Go Again!: Rodney wears an alternate version of his pirate hat while playing baseball with Andy, claiming it to have a special enhancement that "sells" the game.
  • Hypnotic Eyes: Rodney and Andy are depicted with eyes in the form of the swirling color circle known as the "Fobject".
  • Impossibly Delicious Food: Andy's sandwich tastes better than Rodney expected. The special sauce is to thank.
Rodney: Hey, Andy, buddy. This sandwich has taken my mouth on all escape trip to Deliiiiciousville, WITH A 2-HOUR LAYAWAY IN YUMTOWN!
  • Lethal Chefs: Andy and Rodney become some after swapping the former's grandmother's special sauce in favor of lard.
  • Loophole Abuse: Rodney encourages Andy to tell Mr. J to tell him he's sadly mistaken, albeit to no avail.
Rodney: Mr. J, tell Andy he's sadly mistaken.
    Mr. J: No.
Rodney: Andy, tell your dad to tell you you're sadly mistaken.
Andy: (with guilt) Dad, Rodney wants me to tell you to tell me I'm sadly mistaken.
Mr. J: Get some sleep son.
  • Mass Hypnosis: The Fobject commercial is meant to hypnotize viewers with the product's swirly color nature; well, that, and to encourage kids to want to buy it.
  • Never Say "Die": Andy alludes to his grandmother's death as her "vanishing".
Andy: She gave it to me before she vanished.
  • Running Gag:
    • Rodney claiming that his hat sells the sandwiches.
    • Rodney using Mr. J's belongings, which include his toothbrush, coffee mug, underwear, and finally, baseball.
Mr. J: (sips his coffee) This tastes like my toothbrush.
  • Secret Ingredient: Mrs. Johnson, Sr.'s special sauce.
  • Supreme Chefs: Andy and Rodney become some excellent sandwich makers while using the special sauce as an ingredient.
  • Wallet Moths: Rodney pulls out his wallet to reveal complete nothingness inside it, a leaf flying out to emphasize the lack of money.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: It's never explicitly revealed whether Rodney's silly hat or the duo's special sauce resulted in successful business. After Rodney throws away his hat, Andy coincidentally swaps his grandmother's special sauce in favor of lard as the sandwiches' condiment, and the customers are dissatisfied with the sandwiches. This trope is aggravated when Rodney reveals at the end that he has another pair of the same hats, which he then wears while playing baseball with Andy.

"Tree for Two" contains examples of:

  • Bottle Episode: The episode only takes place in the park and Rodney, Andy, Ranger Stu (on a TV screen only), and Mr. J are the only characters appearing (not counting the background park-goers at the beginning).
  • Running Gag: Mr. J wanting to spend time with Andy, but Andy pretending to be in the middle of a pretend game to prevent his dad from discovering Rodney (and the toy rocket) had gotten stuck up the tree.
