Go To

Air date: November 10, 2006

"Birthday Boy": Rodney forgets Andy's birthday, so he rushes to make it right, when he should have planned ahead.

"Freaky Furday": To prove whose life is easier, Andy and Rodney switch roles for a day.

"Birthday Boy" provides examples of:

  • Balloon Belly: Rodney gets an enlarged belly after eating the entirety of the birthday cake he made for Andy in just a few seconds.
  • Birthday Episode: For Andy.
  • A Birthday, Not a Break: Rodney forgets Andy's birthday and acts self-important at the beginning of the episode.
    • He gets excited over Andy's breakfast and steals all of his waffles that Mrs. J explicitly said were for Andy, though this doesn't bother Andy nor Mrs. J.
    • He then tries to get him a present, bake a cake for him, and throw him a party, though all these opportunities are sabotaged.
    • Kyle and Salty Mike then show up at the Johnsons' doorway and reveal their plans to ruin Andy's birthday, though this isn't explored further.
    • Rodney then plans to make money quickly so he can buy Andy a present. He gets a job helping mow neighbors' lawns. All of them deny his service, though he resorts to cutting their grass anyway. Through this method, he writes "Happy Birthday Andy" on the grass with a motorized lawnmower, all while being chased by Mrs. Flatbottom. This results in property damage and destruction of the neighborhood houses, the police arriving, and Mr. J being charged. Nevertheless, Andy loves his present; in fact, he was exactly hoping that Rodney would write him a birthday wish in the grass.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Rodneylaughs off Mr. J's remark of it being Andy's birthday by stating that Andy already had a birthday 12 months ago. It takes him an "intrusive line of questioning" through Mr. J to figure out that 12 months marks 1 year and thus to realize that it's Andy's birthday.
  • Forgetful Jones: Rodney makes Andy a cake for his birthday and looks for plates, to no avail. He then sees a cake sitting on the counter, completely forgetting that he made it and for what purpose. As a result, he gets distracted by the cake and eats it all in a hurry.
  • Forgotten Birthday: Rodney forgetting Andy's birthday is the main focus of the story. When Mr. J tries to remind him of it, Rodney laughs it off by stating that Andy's birthday was 12 months ago.
  • Laughing at Your Own Jokes:
Mrs. J: Andy, we have to get you to the barber, chop-chop! Or should I say, clip-clip! 'q'(laughs)'' I just thought of that!
  • Lethal Chef: The cake Rodney makes for Andy is rather messy and distorted.
  • Mood Whiplash: Rodney's breaks out into his Large Ham tendencies when Mr. J engages in a rational conversation with him regarding how often people have birthdays.
Mr. J: And how often do you have birthdays?
Rodney: Look, I don't know where you're going with this intrusive line of questioning, but I have to say-HOLY CANOLY TODAY IS ANDY'S BIRTHDAY!
  • Overly Long Gag: "My presence is my present," or so Martha declares. The wording confuses Rodney, support more so by the fact that he doesn't see Martha carrying a present. Becomes deconstructed when Martha finally reveals that she also bought Andy a video game, the real present.
  • Pride: Martha declares her presence at the party as her present for Andy upon introduction at the Johnson house. Subverted when she reveals that a video game is her real present for him.
  • Properly Paranoid: Having someone as energetic and crazy as Rodney nearby you as you stand on a ladder will cause reasonable nervousness.
Mr. J: Rodney, standing on a ladder with you nearby makes me nervous. Move.
  • The Scapegoat: Mr. J gets has charges pressed against him for all the chaos that Rodney is responsible for.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: Rodney disregards the neighbors' warnings not to mow their lawn because he wants to give Andy a present.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Kyle and Salty Mike reveal their plans to sabotage Andy's birthday party once they arrive at the Johnsons' house, though this is not further explored after their exit.
  • With Friends Like These...: Rodney forgets Andy's birthday and causes a rather chaotic and unfortunate day for him. See A Birthday, Not a Break above. Downplayed, as Andy doesn't see it this way, but we as the audience do.

"Freaky Furday" provides examples of:

  • Balloon Belly: Rodney gets one after eating various foods.
  • Idiot Ball: As loud music plays, Andy pretends that he can't hear his mom telling him to clean out Rodney's ears, which sets up the conflict of him and Rodney switching roles to prove who has it better.
Andy: (to Mrs. J) I can't tell you telling me to clean Rodney's ears, if that's what you're telling me.
  • Literal-Minded: While Andy is cleaning Rodney's ears, we get this exchange between the two:
Rodney: My ears are so clean you could eat off of them!
(a plate flings itself out of Rodney's ears)
Andy: (gags) Looks like you tried.
  • Sensory Abuse: Loud music plays at its highest volume on a large boom box, puncturing Rodney's eardrums. On top of that, Mrs. J and Andy are forced to yell their sentences.
  • Swapped Roles: Rodney and Andy switch their respective roles as pet and pet owner.
  • Terrified of Germs: Oscar's parents refuse to touch a volleyball once it's touched the ground since it is at that point—by their standards—infested with germs.
